Wisconsin Lutheran College is a four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. It is located in Milwaukee. Biochemistry is a fast-growing and dynamic field that presents a wide array of opportunities for students. The application of chemistry to life allows biological systems to be understood at the molecular level. Biochemistry students learn to appreciate and even love the macromolecules and complex structures that make up living organisms. Wisconsin Lutheran College science faculty work closely together to give students an interdisciplinary view of science, enabling the pursuit of research that lies at the interface of biology and chemistry. This interdiscipinary major engages students as digital storytellers, providing them hands-on experience in digital cinema creation, writing, acting, directing, pre-production and post-production, editing, management, and distribution. The digital cinema and media major allows students to gain skills in digital media creation, production, and distribution. The offered electives give students the flexibility to focus on their area of interest, whether on screen or behind the camera. Electives in cross disciplines allow students to hone their craft using resources not available throughout much of the Midwest. What Makes the Program Distinctive? WLC digital cinema and media majors have the opportunity to earn credit on feature films that are distributed across many markets. WLC students have worked on films such as Journey to Paradise, which was produced in 2010 and is distributed in Family Christian Stores and other outlets worldwide. WLC students have served in professional roles and earned professional credit in other works as well, including Mister Scrooge to See You, which was produced in 2013 by Salty Earth Pictures. This course of study will provide the opportunity for students to focus on the growing interfaces of biology, chemistry, and earth science as applied to the environment. Wisconsin Lutheran College provides an environment in which a student can study the complexities of creation in a classroom where God’s intricate design can be recognized as such. The study of the environment and the relationship that humans have with the environment and with each other regarding environmental issues are addressed from a Christian perspective. This major will help prepare students to be active in society as stewards of God’s creation. Environmental Studies vs. Environmental Science The environmental studies major prepares students for graduate studies or careers in environmentally related fields, law, or the student’s desired emphasis. The marine biology major offers students experiential learning opportunities in marine science and ecosystems, including diving and snorkeling in different marine contexts, hiking and study in shore environments, collection and identification of marine organisms, and lab work. Studies in marine biology will serve as a basis for work or further study in many areas of marine science. The marine biology major provides students with the biological and ecological tools to develop a basic understanding of marine ecosystems. Classroom, laboratory, and field experiences work together to allow students to apply learned techniques and concepts in real-world situations both locally and in marine environments. These studies are taught from a Christian and Lutheran perspective in order to understand that our Lord is responsible for initiating and sustaining these systems. As students study abroad and conduct research in various environments, they are encouraged to consider the social, cultural, and historical factors affecting – and being affected by – the area marine ecosystem. The curriculum in media design provides each student with generalist and specialist education. Students are prepared to think, to problem-solve, to relate, and also to make and to design. Professors with real-life experience as designers and studio artists teach media design courses. Since class sizes are small, students receive plenty of personal attention and are encouraged to balance technological training with a variety of creative energies. Private lessons, master classes, recitals, and vocal and instrumental performing groups serve to advance and strengthen the student’s skills in making music. The music major features academic studies in music analysis, music literature and repertoire, and the historical development of music. What Makes the Program Distinctive? WLC’s music program offers the chance to study both the methods and the aesthetics of this powerful mode of communication. Students can develop their talents and enjoy the enriching, broadening experience of music performance, both individually and as part of a group. The program prepares musicians for music ministry, educational settings, and graduate studies. The Music Department is housed in the Center for Arts and Performance, which features a 370-seat concert hall, practice rooms, a rehearsal hall, a multimedia lecture hall, and an electronic music lab. WLC sport and exercise science majors are able to take advantage of small, active, and participatory lab experiences. These labs provide hands-on training and experiential learning opportunities.
