Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State University, also called Pitt State or PSU, is a public university with around 6,000 students located in Pittsburg, Kansas, United States. A large percentage of the student population consists of residents within the Pittsburg region; the gender proportion is relatively equal. While most of the students are Americans, international students enroll from about 40 countries throughout the world. Pitt State has an 18:1 student-to-faculty ratio and is located on approximately 600 manicured acres.

It is a member of the Kansas Board of Regents (the same governing board that oversees the University of Kansas, Kansas State, Emporia State, and Wichita State). The president of PSU is Dr. Steve Scott.

Pittsburg State University, a comprehensive regional university, provides undergraduate and graduate programs and services to the people of southeast Kansas, but also to others who seek the benefits offered. This is accomplished by the unique combination of academic programs in the four colleges of the University: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Technology. The university is equally committed to fulfilling its statewide mission in technology and economic development by facilitating partnerships with secondary and postsecondary educational institutions, businesses, and industries.

Pittsburg State University will be the first choice for:

  • Students seeking a quality education through nationally recognized programs;
  • The most talented faculty and staff seeking dynamic careers;
  • Partnerships with communities, businesses, organizations, and individuals in the region;
  • External investment by donors, grantmakers, and government.

Core Values

Student Focused

Continue a campus environment where students feel a connection to the university and its faculty and staff by making students and their success the driving force behind institutional decisions at all levels.

Ensure the university strives for outcomes that are exemplary by demanding quality in all aspects of the institution’s operations.

By Doing Learn

Perpetuate the university’s founding principle of “By doing learn” through the creation of academic programs and opportunities that engage students in real-world activities.

Foster a diverse and international campus culture among students, faculty, and staff that supports an understanding and acceptance of a variety of ideas, beliefs, and cultures, thereby creating an opportunity for all.

Enhance the university’s strong relationship with the region and the Pittsburg community by maintaining a welcoming campus and creating big university opportunities in a small campus atmosphere.

Encourage students, faculty, and staff to take informed, calculated, and strategic risks to build upon their success, start new ventures, utilize new technologies, and forge an entrepreneurial path forward.

Recognize there are limited and finite resources in the world and, therefore, commit ourselves to establish best practices to conserve resources as well as decrease the university's carbon footprint.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Pitt State is ranked among the Best Midwestern Universities - Master's category. The U.S. News also ranked PSU among the top in Midwest Universities - Master's category, and showed that students average the least amount of debt carried after graduation (based on the 2004 class). Furthermore, in 2010 PSU's Master's in Business Administration program was ranked by the Princeton Review as one of the top 15 in the nation in the categories of Marketing and Accounting. The results were determined by a nationwide survey that questioned thousands of students about their academic experiences.
