Introduction

Jinwen University of Science and Technology (JUST) was originally established and named as Jin-Wen College in 1980. It was subsequently upgraded into Jin-Wen Institute of Technology in 1998, as the first Institute of Technology for higher education in the Taipei region. In August of 2002, fifteen experts and professionals in various fields were selected and appointed by the Ministry of Education and formed a non-profit Board of Trustees chaired by the attorney-at-law Ms. Ching-Feng Wang. Furthermore, Dr. Wen-Shion Chang, the former founding president of National Yunlin University of Science and Technology was selected and appointed to be the chairman of the Board of Trustees from August, 2005 until now. In August of 2006, Dr. Yung-Fu Cheng, the former vice-president of National Taipei University of Technology as well as a reputable scholar in technological universities and colleges was invited by the Board of Trustees to be the incumbent president. And it was renamed into Jinwen University of Science & Technology in February of 2007.

Currently, there are 15 departments and 4 graduate programs within 4 colleges at JUST:

Excellent Campus Facilities & International Safety Certification: The campus of JUST has modern and excellent facilities and has been certified as a safe school by the International Safe Schools (ISS) of the World Health Organization (WHO). JUST lies on a spacious and scenic campus with 116,191 square meters and 83,387 square meter dormitory. To provide all faculty and students with a safe learning environment, JUST applied for the certification of a safe school and was certified as an international safe school by WHO, United Nations, in May 2010 and July 2014.

  4. Nation's Lowest Tuition & Highest Student Care Quality: Tuition at JUST has not been increased since 2000, being listed as the nation's lowest by the MOE. Under the supervision of the non-profit Board of Trustees, all school revenues are spent on teaching and research, as well as scholarships, part-time job opportunities and financial aids for students, all of which help students concentrate on their studies.

The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) was established in August 1, 2007. The educational objective of EECS is to get united with domestic electronic and computer technology industries, jointly promote the collaboration between industry and university, and help forward the upgrade of these industries. The college of EECS consists of three departments/institutes, namely, the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) department, and the Institute of Computer and Communication Engineering (CCE). The EE department was established in August 1, 2001. Before its formation, it was formerly called Electronic Engineering Section which was set up in August 1, 2000. The CSIE department was also established in August 1, 2001, while the Institute of CCE was formed in August 1, 2007. The college of EECS has 27 full-time faculties, including 4 Full Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant Professors, and 7 Lecturers. There are totally 781 students enrolled in EECS, including 756 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students. The growth and development of the college of EECS follows one of the university’s overall objectives, namely, “Create A Superior Teaching and Research Environment to Cultivate and Mold Talents in Science and Technology”. The Communication and Electromagnetic Wave program has emphasized to educate students with the knowledge to design and develop communication-related circuits, and the abilities to measure and analyze EMC and SI for RF and high-speed circuits through very thorough theoretical and practical training. The history of Department of Applied Foreign Languages, English Division The five-year junior college program in the Department of Applied Foreign Languages, English division, was set up in August, 1995. The junior college was restructured into Jinwen Institute of Technology in August, 1998. In 2001, Applied English Department was set up, and started to recruit four-year and two-year program university students. By then, the five-year junior program no longer enrolled new students. In 2003, the Continuing Education program was set up and opened its doors to the two-year university evening program and in–service weekend program students. On starting the Applied Foreign Language program in the junior college, Mr. Chang, the chairman, with the vision of globalization, had invested huge funds in recruiting foreign and domestic language teaching professionals, in addition to purchasing high quality audiovisual teaching equipment. With the excellent hard and soft equipment, it has allowed the creation of Americanized English learning environment, and has created the so called “Global Village”, which was well-known among the northern Institutes of Technology, and universities at the time. Established in 1997, the food and beverage management department aims to offer students a deep-rooted knowledge of academic classroom lectures and demonstrations as well as hands-on laboratory experience so as to meet the increasing demands of the hospitality industry. In view of the fact that practical competence is paramount in the working environment, the department provides a number of brand-new facilities and equipment for students to gain hands-on working experience. Among these are a cocktail-mixing laboratory, a multifunction beverage laboratory, a banquet room, a Chinese culinary laboratory, a western culinary laboratory, and a demonstration classroom.
