Introduction

Irkutsk National Research Technical University (INRTU) is located in the city of Irkutsk, 75 km away from the pearl of Siberia – the lake Baikal. INRTU today is a large academic and research center, one of the leading technical universities, the most eastern National Research University among the 29 NRUs in the Russian Federation. It was founded in 1930 as Siberian Mining Institute, in 1960 became Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute, in 1993 - Irkutsk State Technical University and in 2010 - Irkutsk National Research Technical University.

Mission of the University is to provide high quality, affordable, up-to-date education, transformed through our knowledge and experience, through the development of scientific and educational technologies.

Our goal is to educate the specialists of new formation capable for practical application of new knowledge in their scientific, industrial, entrepreneurial activity.

INRTU has 17 500 students, it is one third of total number of students in Irkutsk city, including about 1 300 international students. Teaching staff of the University numbers 900 persons. Academic structure of the University comprises the following main institutes - Baikal school of BRICKS (English-taught programs); Institute of High Technologies; Institute of Architecture, Construction and Design; Institute of Aircraft Construction, Mechanical Engineering and Transport; Institute of Subsurface Resource Management; Institute of Economics, Management and Law; Institute of Power Engineering, and Institute of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication where they study Russian language before entering the main educational programs - along with vocational schools and a college. There are 1 500 000 vol in the library. Academic year lasts from September till June, and is divided into two semesters: September - January, February – June. The total number of degree programs (bachelor, master, PhD) is 199. Tuition fee for self-paid students varies from 134 000 to 206 000 RUR for Bachelor's degree programs, from 145 000 to 216 000 for Master's degree programs and from 162 000 to 231 000 for PhD degree programs. Tuition fee for the 10-month preparatory course for those foreign students, who do not speak Russian, is 75 000 RUR per academic year. Other training and research centers at INRTU are Interdisciplinary Regional Centre of Advanced Training, Training and Innovation Center "Energy Efficiency", Training and Research Center on Oil and Gas Production, Corporate Training and Research Center “INRTU – IRKUTSKENERGO.”

University campus is located on the left side of the Angara River, in 10-15 min driving from the city center. All university buildings and student dormitories are in 5 minutes walking from each other. Sport facilities, park, student canteens, student polyclinic, sanatorium are located in the university campus. Accommodation in a student dormitory costs ca. 850 RUR/month per 1 place in a room for 2 or 3 students. Sport facilities for students include stadium for 2 500 seats, tracks – 8, soccer fields – 3, gyms - 16, gym for rock climbing, sports training camp for 800 pax, 21 clubs for extracurricular student activities. Medical insurance policy costs 5 000 RUR per year and includes polyclinic and stationary medical assistance. Average monthly miscellaneous is about 6 000-7 000 RUR/month, single bus/fixed-run taxi/tram/trolleybus fare – 15 - 25 RUR, prolongation of student multi visa – 1 600 RUR.
