Digital Forensics focuses on computer security and digital crime investigation as a field of expertise. The degree addresses important topics such as information security, system security and network security. Work in law enforcement or corporate security This three-year bachelor’s degree focusing on digital forensics and investigation is unique in Norway. The degree provides students with a working knowledge of securing and investigating digital systems, covering core theory combined with a solid practical foundation, to achieve the competence level needed in security roles within the industry. You will develop a rigorous methodical approach to capturing, analysing and investigating a digital crime, handling security breaches to quickly regain control of a situation, and gathering evidence in a professional manner. You will also have the required skills to assess risks and secure digital environments. This degree enables you to work in either law enforcement or corporate security. In a crime scene, your task is to advise police investigators how to gather digital devices for later analysis. Identifying some types of evidence in a physical crime scene, a weapon or potential source of DNA for instance, can be fairly simple. Identifying relevant sources of digital evidence however, is a greater challenge. This is due to the variety of devices that can capture and store potentially relevant information. The analysis of evidence is also more complex since a device will usually contain a wide range of both user and system files. You need to know where potential evidence may exist and have the skills to recover the information in a correct manner. Evidence Analysis requires the investigator to use both investigative skills and tools to sift through the vast amounts of information in order to detect signs of user activity. Year 1 There is a focus on building key skills, including mathematics, and an understanding of how software is constructed. The foundations of how computers work are also covered, in addition to the core concepts of network technology. Essential research skills are developed, which are the initial steps in developing investigative methods and the ability to verify information. Students are introduced to key technologies used to secure computer systems. The first year of study also begins the process of processing a crime scene, collecting digital evidence and securing information that might be used in an investigation. Year 2 The second year course explores in more depth the different methods and structures used to store information inside computer systems, mobile phones and tablets. Students explore the file systems used for data storage and other areas of the operating systems that contain records of user’s behaviour, vital timestamps and other information the computer needs during normal operation. This information can be extracted from case samples and used to build timelines of user activities. Year 3 The final year of the degree allows you to major in the subjects of interest, and to explore advanced forensics problems as they occur in new technologies. You can choose to specialize in different areas such as: "Data Recovery", "Incident Management" and "Cryptography" amongst others. The final project is an opportunity for you to explore new systems and programs with support from expert staff, and to become a competent and knowledgeable investigator in your chosen area of cyber security or cyber crime investigation. Postgraduate education options Graduates from the Bachelor of Digital Forensics program can apply to study related computing and information security topics at a Masters and a Doctoral level at a Norwegian or International university of their choice. Career options The competence and skills you gain through this course are highly sought after in government, law enforcement and industry sectors. The enormous growth in technology creates real dangers for both corporate and domestic critical infrastructures. Most large businesses that rely on information technology are in need of candidates with digital forensics competence. This bachelor’s degree uniquely qualifies you to handle challenges within a range of organizations, either as the single security expert in a small company, or as a team member in a large multinational corporation. You will be able to handle security implementation, investigate computer offences and digital fraud, and serve as an expert witness in trials and law suits. With your knowledge, you will be able to critically assess and mitigate threats to digital infrastructure. As a graduate, you can apply for vacant positions (Chief) Information Security Officer, Forensic and Cyber Crime Investigator, and/or eDiscovery Investigator. Admission requirements Three-year upper secondary education or a vocational education certificate. [-]
