The Faculty has five degree programmes of five (5) or four (4) or three (3) academic years for the GCE ‘O’ Level and ‘A” Level holders respectively, leading to the award of : Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) degree with limited specialization in the final year in any of the following options: Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Agronomy, Animal Production and Crop Protection. The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin was established in the 1982/83 session and had its foundation Dean in the 1983/84 session. Presently, the Faculty comprises of seven (7) Academic departments viz: Agricultural Economics and Farm Management Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Agronomy Animal Production Crop Protection Home Economics and Food Science Forest Resources Management offices. Also in the same complex are Departments of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development; Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management; Department of Crop Protection; Department of Home Economics and Food Science; and Department of Forest Resource Management. Historical Development The Faculty of Education, which is a pacesetter in terms of the quality of its academic staff, infrastructure, teacher education curriculum, and its disciplined students, was one of the three pioneer Faculties (Arts, Education, and Science) when the University was established in 1976. The Faculty has grown by leaps and bounds from the initial two Departments (Teacher Education and Guidance and Management), to Nine (9) Departments today: Adult and Primary Education, Arts Education, Counsellor Education, Educational Management, Educational Technology, Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, Human Kinetics Education, Science Education and Social Sciences Education. Brief History: Introduction The Faculty of Engineering and Technology started in 1978 with a total of about 51 students, three academic staff, three administrative staff, a messenger/cleaner and a driver. Initially there were three Departments (Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering). In 1982 the Department of Agricultural Engineering was established, though students were first admitted into the programme during the 1983/84 session. In 2008/2009 session, the Department of Chemical Engineering was established with an intake of about twenty students at 100 level. The curriculum of Department of Agricultural Engineering was reviewed and its name was changed to Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering during that session. During the 2009/2010 session, the University senate approved the establishment of Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The first set of students in Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering were admitted in 2010/2011 session whereas the first set for Biomedical Engineering were admitted in 2011/2012 session. Postgraduate programmes were introduced during the 1985/86 session. Presently the Faculty has a student population of about 1700 undergraduates and 120 postgraduate students. The Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin is one of the foremost law faculties in Nigeria. The faculty was initially established in 1983 as a unit in the Department of Business Administration, under the headship of Professor Eyitayo Lambo. By 1984, it was upgraded into a full department in the Faculty of Business and Social sciences. The then head of the law department was Professor R.W. James. Degree Programmes The Law degree programme was initially established in the 1983/1984 academic session as a department in the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. It was cancelled in 1986/1987 and was re-established in 1993/1994 as a full-fledged Faculty. Now the Faculty of Law is one of the most prestigious Law faculties in Nigeria with well over 40 intellectually sound teaching staff supported by the most astute and friendly administrative staff. Following the establishment of the University of Ilorin as a University College of the University of Ibadan by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September, 1975, the Faculty of Science was one of three Foundation Faculties that started Academic business on 23rd October, 1976. The five foundation departments were Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology and Mineral Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. In the 1977/78 Session two more departments, Biochemistry and Statistics were added. The department of Biological Sciences was splitted into three, namely Microbiology, Plant Biology and Zoology in 2000/2001 academic session. while Computer Science was transferred to Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences in 2008/2009 session. Currently there are ten (10) programmes in the nine (9) Departments of the Faculty. Chemistry department has two programmes which are Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.
