1922 - was founded as a Polytechnical Faculty of Tbilisi State University
1990 - Georgian Polytechnic Institute was granted the university status and was named the Georgian Technical University (GTU)
2001 - GTU became a full member of the European University Association – EUA
2005 – Georgia joined Bologna Process

STEM Programs at GTU

GTU has been offering Engineering Degrees for decades with special attention to the following STEM fields: Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering (50+ years), Energy and Electrical Engineering (90+ years), Civil Engineering (90+ years), Food Industry, and Forestry (60+ years). GTU participates in Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project for STEM Higher Education Development in Georgia. Indicative STEM programs include Electrical (Power) Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering fields at Georgian Technical University. Project objectives:

  • Build up capacity in Georgian public universities

and to offer international standard US degrees and ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation in STEM fields.

New Program at GTU Under MCC-Georgia’s Program

In partnership with Auburn University (USA) and Georgian Research and Development Foundation, GTU has submitted project proposal “A New Program to Promote Workforce Training in Wireless Engineering Technology to Enhance Economic Development in Georgia” in response to the MCC-Georgia’s Program Improvement Competitive Grants for Industry-led Skills and Workforce Development Project. A new vocational education center “Georgian Wireless Vocational Center (GWVC)” will be established and administrated by GTU within this project.

ISU/GTU partnership program

In line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Iowa State University (ISU) and GTU, a new ISU/GTU partnership program was launched at GTU to align 5 undergraduate programs at a newly established Agrarian Faculty of GTU with ISU's relevant programs and enable program-to-program transfer of Georgian students to ISU after successfully completing two years of study at GTU. GTU educational-scientific activities are funded by the local and international scientific organizations and funds, including:

  • Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation (SRNSF);
  • Georgia Research and Development Foundation (GRDF);

This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to embark on a career in the design specializations of interior and furniture design, product design, transportation design, or visual communication design, and other allied design-related specializations. The programme gives students a broad education in the social, cultural, economic and political contexts of design.

The programme provides specialized training and experience in the specific design fields: in design practice, processes, and methodology in ergonomic design and sustainable design; knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes; in professional design presentations using a variety of techniques to an international standard; in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Students elect courses that extend their knowledge in their discipline in computer programming, web design and mobile app development, animation and game design; environmental psychology and furniture making; automotive engineering, amongst others.... Bachelor in Engineering Physics

The purpose of the educational programme in engineering physics is the training in specializations of this specialty, such as a physical computer science, medical physics and radiation safety of humans and environment, physical-technical expertise and technical diagnostics. The programme aims to obtain knowledge of physical foundations of information technology, applications of physical methods in medicine, fundamentals of modern methods to prevent undesirable effects of irradiation, fundamental issues of technology in microelectronics and optoelectronics, fundamentals of modern diagnostic equipment and electronic devices, fundamentals of methods of physical and technical expertise.
