American University of Paris (AUP)

In a world where accelerating change and ever-shifting personal, cultural, and economic connections are the norm, everyone—at least occasionally—is a foreigner.

Today’s world demands our ability to see the world as another person sees it, even if we might disagree with that person’s ideas and perspectives. We must know enough about the world and ourselves to function effectively in a variety of professional and social settings. We must be comfortable living at the edge of our own comfort zone.

And it is only through that comfort—that feeling of being at home in the world—that we can pursue our own ambitions, champion our own causes, further our own ideas.

An American-style education in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities

AUP is itself a successful experiment in international, interdisciplinary education. AUP brings together all the best elements of the American university model—small, discussion-based classes; a collaborative relationship between students and faculty; a special emphasis on critical thinking and clear communication—with the cultural, social, and professional opportunities of one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities.

Ours is an academic culture of engagement, global citizenship, and community. Our mission and values reflect this as we seek to foster in students and faculty alike a critical sense of commitment to a world of interdependence.

An international reputation for excellence

AUP’s credentials are unimpeachable. We are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Our faculty members hail from some of the finest universities in the world. And we engage in special academic partnerships with such prestigious institutions as Oxford University, the Université de Paris Sorbonne, and New York City’s New School.

Since our founding in 1962, we have provided a multilingual, multicultural learning environment. Renowned as a global center for innovative, interdisciplinary research, we educate global citizens who take their places as responsible actors in communities, civil societies, and countries around the world.

Alumni turning a life-changing education into world-changing careers

AUP has more than 15,000 graduates in 141 countries, making ours one of the most truly global alumni networks in the world. Well over 90 percent of our students are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. And many have gone on to leadership positions at institutions as diverse as the Commercial Bank of Kuwait, BASF in Germany, the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania, Google in France, the Centre Party of Sweden, and the United States Department of Energy.

Paris is a renowned capital of art offering a feast for the art lover’s eyes. From the architecture of Paris itself to Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d’Orsay to the large holdings at the legendary Louvre and many lesser-known museums, there are nearly endless treasures to discover. The majors and minors in Art History and Fine Arts at The American University of Paris draw heavily on the extraordinary number of museums and major monuments in Paris — and in Europe as a whole. B.A. in Global CommunicationsTechnology has made distance nearly irrelevant, the Internet a revolution. Rapid transformations now sweep societies: media converges, new cultural spaces and practices emerge, belief structures shift. The Department of Global Communications trains global citizens to understand and respond to these phenomena — and to play an active role. Students learn to think critically and creatively about the contemporary environment and to master communication in all its forms. An interdisciplinary approach in a global worldBecause global communications concern the world, the field itself sits at the intersection of many: sociology, anthropology, politics, literature. How does mass media affect society? Do depictions of gender follow a pattern—and how can those patterns be changed? What are the implications of human-computer interactions? How do film and the written word explore different cultures—and what is the meaning of the messages they express? In an ever-changing, cross-cultural environment, our interdisciplinary approach draws on the strength of several disciplines. Students are exposed to both theory and practice, with a strong grounding in the field’s historical roots. Global communications serve as your gateway to the world. The power of political communicationIn addition to our already interdisciplinary nature, the Global Communications Department created a Comparative Political Communication minor to serve students interested in a more in-depth treatment of that important overlap. Power, political institutions, policy, the press — it’s rich terrain for exploration.Get in touchWe invite you to discover all of our majors and minors, explore our diverse course offerings, and meet our accomplished faculty. You’ll find many inspiring initiatives,... [-]

International programs and careersThe Department of International Business Administration offers three majors and minors:

International Business Administration addresses all the functional areas of business within an international context. In addition to learning the concepts, models, and techniques associated with business, you’ll practice problem-solving, leadership, teaming, and effective communication skills. We emphasize global understanding, ethics, and responsibility. International Finance is the application of economics within financial and non-financial institutions and markets. Our extensive program of finance courses prepares you to understand the economic and financial environment, and enables you to evaluate alternative investment opportunities, finance those opportunities, and manage optimal portfolios—all skills necessary for jobs in financial firms or investment banks.
