ARCHIP – Architectural Institute in Prague

Introduction

ARCHIP is a progressive new school of architecture, a hybrid of global and local scales, of conceptual and technical training, and a philosophical space combining the best of the European and American tradition of architecture education. We offer the following programs:

  • Undergraduate program (Architecture – Bc degree – 3 years)
  • Graduate program (Architecture and Urbanism – MA degree – 2 years)
  • Global Architecture + Design, one of the CIEE College Study Abroad Programmes (1 semester)

What makes ARCHIP unique

Diversity of experience

During their studies, students can experience a semester in all 5 different studios at our school and try out an array of different design approaches and working methods

International environment

With students from around 25 countries and a strict limit of 30 people in one year, a great team spirit is established and direct contact between teachers and students is carried out, which enables the students to highly develop on a personal level

Real-life relevancy

All of the studio leaders are still active in the professional field of architecture, therefore the students have a unique chance to gain insight into actual processes of architecture and learn to handle challenges relevantly to a “real-life” practice

School’s outreach

The school collaborates on various projects with the municipality, NGOs, developers, and other partners, which ensures that students gain practical experience, contacts and increase their desirability on the job market

Location

School is situated in a lively neighborhood in the very center of Prague, so the students are constantly immersed in the city’s world-renown architectural heritage

Campus Features

The organization of the Architectural Design (AD) studio at ARCHIP follows the principles of the ‘Vertical studio’ model. The Vertical studio is organized by combining students of different years into a single studio. Within the Vertical studio, all years cooperate on a single site and program, yet their scale, scope, and aims are different.

  • Three independent studios for the undergraduate students and one for the graduate students running in parallel;
  • Between 15–18 students in each studio, each with a similar number of first, second, and third-year students;
  • The project's site and the program is the same for all studios, the specific design approaches and methodology within each studio however varies;
  • Each studio has a pair of leaders, professional architects with their own practice;
  • Students switch studios after each semester to gain exposure to the full range of practices and design thinking unique to each studio;
  • Third-year students are allowed to select a studio of their choice.

At ARCHIP, the faculty and the school management strive to create a highly stimulating learning environment for our students. We greatly value dialogue – both as an integral part of the process of architecture and design, and a method of teaching and learning.

CIEE – our new home

ARCHIP resides in CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) in the Vyšehrad quarter, a super quick stroll with a tram to the very center of the city. This historical neighborhood offers a lot of history, calm and nice parks with mesmerizing vistas, and, of course, a multiplicity of beer gardens.

ARCHIP benefits from cooperation with CIEE in a number of ways. The students are exposed to a beautiful historical campus and they are able to meet like-minded foreigners involved in CIEE's exchange program. CIEE itself is a unique institution:

CIEE is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization. It is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organizations and currently operates in 30+ countries worldwide. Since 1947, CIEE has helped thousands of people gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live and work in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world by offering the most comprehensive, relevant, and valuable exchange programs available.
