Biochemistry, by textbook definition, is an effort to understand biology through the context of chemistry. Biochemistry lectures at Wartburg College topically include macromolecules, enzymes, and human metabolism. The Wartburg biochemistry program has grown steadily since its inception fifteen years ago, with over seventy-five students having graduated with degrees in biochemistry within the last ten years. Approximately 40% of those graduates were accepted into medical school within a year of graduation (94 percent acceptance rate), while 20% matriculated into Ph.D. programs throughout the county (100 percent acceptance rate). Over the last five years (2011-2016), Wartburg Biochemistry majors have scored 75 ± 20% nationally on their MCAT exams (N=23).
