Introduction

civil engineering

Brief Introduction

The bachelor programme in Civil Engineering is a 3½-year full-time programme taught in English, which provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to manage structural calculations, drawings, soil mechanics, load calculations, etc.

The flexibility of the programme and the variety of electives allow you to create an individual degree that will prepare you for a desirable career.

Civil Engineering is an international profession that involves the design, construction, operation, and improvement of the built environment. Civil Engineers provide the technical expertise and management skills to plan, design, construct and maintain such facilities as buildings, air and sea ports, water supply systems, waste treatment systems, road and rail networks and bridges - in a sustainable manner to reduce the impact on the environment. This programme takes place at Campus Horsens.

Content and Structure

The programme is organised in seven semesters, where each semester deals with a specific topic.

This approach gradually leads to an understanding of all aspects of the civil engineering process, such as building design, town development and the planning and implementation of building projects.

The programme provides you with a solid theoretical education combined with hands-on experience gained from practical assignments solved individually as well as in groups. Theory and class-teaching will predominate at the beginning of the course, whereas later on work will be more project-oriented reflecting the fact that Civil Engineers often work on projects involving many people.

The learning process covers theory in combination with a number of multidisciplinary projects to be carried out both individually as well as in groups. Theory lessons and classes will have higher intensity at the beginning of each semester, whereas they, later on, tend to be more project-oriented.

During the 5th semester of this programme, you have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a work placement period, which involves working for an international company in Denmark or abroad.

On the 6th semester, you will choose a specialisation while the final 7th semester will focus on the Bachelor project.

Specialisations

There are 3 possible specialisations to choose from on the Civil Engineering programme.

Structural Design
Structural Design focuses on design and the calculation of constructions made of concrete, steel, wood and masonry.

Civil Works
This specialisation focuses on planning, calculations, methods of processing, project management, finance, law as well as road- and traffic design.

Energy Design
The specialisation focuses on the design and calculation of energy systems in buildings.

You can also choose a combination of the 3 specialisations - in this case, you get no speciality designation - but on the other hand, you will have the possibility of a broader composition of the subjects you're interested in.

Admission Requirements

VIA University College will accept applications from international students having at least 12 years of combined primary and secondary education awarding a diploma from an accredited secondary school.

You must have mathematics at an advanced level (corresponding to a Danish A-level), physics at an intermediate level (corresponding to a Danish B-level) and chemistry at a basic level (corresponding to a Danish C-level).

In addition to your secondary school diploma, you must document your mathematics level by providing a translated version of the syllabus of your secondary school advanced level mathematics course.

If your secondary school advanced level mathematics syllabus does not include the topics listed in these Math requirements, you may be required to participate in a two-week compulsory mathematics course in August.
