UT’s major in cybersecurity is a cutting-edge program that teaches students to protect the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of information and information systems that support modern organizations. Students receive a comprehensive education that focuses on both the fundamentals of information systems as well as advanced topics in network security, cryptography, risk management, security governance, business continuity, security architecture, physical security, and critical infrastructures. Students practice their skills using industry-standard tools and software in UT’s cybersecurity labs. A dedicated network allows them to engage in real-time practice and research. A minor in cybersecurity is also offered.

Professional Certifications

A key feature of UT’s cybersecurity program is that it prepares students for professional security certifications and designations, such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam, which provides a competitive edge in the job market. Students can also prepare for the Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or Security+ certification, both of which are valuable when starting in this field.

Internships at UT and Beyond

Gaining relevant work experience is strongly recommended and can often lead to job opportunities after graduation. Cybersecurity faculty members, who possess the highest credentials in their field, offer students valuable insights and industry connections as they apply for internships with local and national companies. UT students have interned or worked with prominent corporations such as Raymond James, Jabil, and SAP. Students also have the unique opportunity to intern with UT’s Office of Information Security, which provides the University with an integrated information security program. Students work with expert staff on projects such as developing information security policies and data protection procedures, completing security and compliance reviews, and implementing technical measures to protect campus resources.
