Introduction

General Description

Study literature, strengthen your writing abilities, and expand your language skills.

Learn how to think, read, write and speak with clarity and depth in a supportive and intellectually-engaging atmosphere through courses such as:

  • Multi-ethnic American literature
  • Hemingway's artistry
  • Modern American poetry
  • History of the English language
  • The rise of the novel

Through the study of nonfiction and fiction literature, poetry, novels, and short stories, you will grasp an understanding of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Plath, Huxley and others as you evaluate, critique, and discuss.

English Middle/High School Education

The English Secondary Education major contains a concentration in English literature. To obtain preparation in the broad field language arts, students must also complete either a writing major, writing minor or theatre minor.

This program leads to grades 4-12 English licensure in the State of Wisconsin and would allow one to teach courses such as literature, speech and composition-based courses. Certification for licensure also requires completion of the Instruction minor or required teacher certification coursework and student teaching in the middle and/or high school.

While our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Michigan and Minnesota. Students are encouraged to check with their state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.
