Introduction
As one of the newest programs at UW-Superior, the multimedia journalism program is designed to reflect changes in the journalism industry and meet the increasing demand for multimedia journalists and communication professionals. The program is unique in the region, differing from traditional journalism programs by preparing students to be skilled digital storytellers who research, compose and produce work to be mass communicated across a wide range of media platforms.
Students choose a complementary focus in the areas of business communication, internet communication, media production, or photography. This program is available either on-campus as a Communicating Arts major concentration or online as a minor.
Developed in consultation with regional media and communications leaders, students have numerous experiential learning opportunities on campus and in the community, including with Wisconsin Public Radio (located on campus), The Promethean student newspaper, Yellowjacket Athletics and more.
Students studying on-campus benefit from newly remodeled educational spaces and state-of-the-art equipment, including a media editing lab, professional-grade video and audio production equipment and the KUWS recording studio.
Did you know?
This program includes a culminating senior year project which integrates and synthesizes the student's coursework (theories, concepts, skill competencies) into a formal project and/or experience. This, combined with other class projects and experiential learning opportunities ensures students graduate with a portfolio of work that demonstrates their multimedia abilities.
UW-Superior has long offered a journalism major and has many successful alumni who are leaders in the field. This program has been newly redesigned to prepare students for emerging careers and trends in the industry.
The Communicating Arts Department offers a Study Away in Ghana opportunity for Communicating Arts elective credits.
Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center houses two theatres, a scene workshop, a video production studio and media lab, as well as the studios for the Wisconsin Public Radio station KUWS.

Program Outcome
- To develop news writing and reporting skills that are the foundation of multimedia journalism.
- To learn and apply techniques in the production of digital stories for dissemination across multimedia platforms.
Career Opportunities
Multimedia journalism graduates often work for traditional news, radio or television stations, but there is also increasing demand for their skills in the fields of public relations, social media marketing, web content production and others. Opportunities abound for graduates of this program as the following trends indicate:
- Traditional newsrooms are increasingly moving online, creating a need within those organizations for people with technical skills such as digital storytelling, data analysis, multimedia production, and web design.
- Non-journalistic organizations are finding that as they move more operations online, they need people with strong writing, organizational, researching, editing, and communication skills to effectively serve their clients and audiences.
