Introduction
Bachelor of Theology (BTheol) Endorsed in Pastoral Studies
The Bachelor of Theology (BTheol) requires three years of full-time study. The degree can also be completed via Distance Learning. Students are required to take papers in various Theology subjects areas and are also able to include up to five papers from outside Theology in their degree Program.
The degree does not have provision for major or minor subjects, but may be endorsed in Pastoral Studies.
Students are taught by research-active scholars, are expected to undertake a variety of learning experiences and are challenged to develop their intellectual independence. Graduates of the Program are well-informed about the key themes of and approaches to the different areas of study which are encompassed by the subject areas of Theology and have the ability to integrate learning across the range of subject areas of Theology.
Pastoral Theology is particularly designed for students entering some form of church ministry. Papers in Pastoral Theology offer a multidisciplinary study of church life, offering students the opportunity to reflect on the practice of Christian ministry.
An endorsed BTheol degree is an possible qualification for the BTheol(Hons) or PGDipTheol Program in the subject of endorsement.
Bachelor of Theology with Honours also available
The aim of the BTheol(Hons) degree is to help students become highly skilled, versatile, independent thinkers with the research experience, information literacy and communication skills necessary for an advanced professional career in Theology or further academic study at the Masters or PhD level.

Every BTheol Program must include the following core papers:
- Interpreting the Old Testament
- Interpreting the New Testament
- The History of Christianity
- Doing Theology
- God and Ethics in the Modern World
- One PAST paper

A Program may be endorsed in Pastoral Studies if it includes a total of eight Pastoral Studies papers, including three at 300-level (for the purposes of this endorsement may be counted as Pastoral Studies papers in addition to PAST papers).
The BTheol may be completed without endorsement

Application details
Applicants must apply online. They should also attach all the necessary supporting documents which includes scanned copies of their official high school or foundation transcripts (awards gained, marks, grades); scanned copies of the relevant official transcripts of previous university study; and provide proof of their identity this is usually achieved by providing a certified copy of the personal details page of their passport or a birth certificate (in English). Applicants may also be required to submit an Educational Credential Evaluators report (ECE). As soon as applicants have completed their online application, their proof of identity document must be posted to International Office, University of Otago, PO Box 56, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand.
