The minor in Anthropology provides exposure to the field in general, and permits a student to focus on one of three subdisciplines currently available within the Anthropology Program at UNBC. The Minor would complement a Major Program in a variety of disciplines, including First Nations Studies, Women's Studies, History, Biology and Environmental Studies.

Economics is the study of how societies provide for the well-being of their citizens and residents as well as public policies to promote well-being. It is a discipline which examines the behaviour of consumers, employees, business, government and organizations and their interactions. How the economy performs – and provides us with the quality of life that we want - depends on how well all these different sectors interact.

UNBC’s English program includes course offerings in Canadian, British, American and International English literatures as well as world literature in English translation, and literary theory. Key areas include First Nations Literature, Canadian Literature, Comparative Literature, Women’s Literature, Feminist Criticism and Theory, literature and media technology, and the relationship between literature and other disciplines.

Indigenous studies is a diverse discipline unified by our engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities in a reciprocal manner, which forefronts Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge systems, and respects their diversity and right to self-determination. Given the sordid history of Indigenous-settler relations around the world, we are well aware of the need to work towards equity, diversity, and inclusion and actively work to combat all forms of discrimination and prejudice in our teaching, research, and service to the community.

The Bachelor of Arts (General) degree provides a broad education in the arts. Students are required to complete 120 credit hours including a minimum of 60 credit hours of upper division course work. Ninety credit hours (including 30 credit hours at the upper level) must consist of Humanities and Social Science courses. UNBC Geography is a vibrant community of human and physical geographers. In addition to teaching our undergraduate courses, our faculty members supervise graduate students in a range of graduate programs. This degree provides students with comprehensive training in the study of human geography, emphasizing the cultural, social, economic, and political connections between people and their environments.

Global and International Studies, hereafter referred to as Global Studies, seeks to tackle this brave new world in all its complexity. Historians study what people have thought, said, and done in the past, and they help students think critically about how historical processes shape the present. The study of history contributes to critical thinking, helps to develop intellectual maturity, and assists students to present ideas clearly and accurately. Courses in our department blend thematic and geographic approaches to the study of history.

Canadian politics and society are becoming more diverse and more global. New opportunities are open to those who are equipped to meet the challenges of a changing Canada and a changing world. Political science helps students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to be a part of those opportunities, and to direct their lives and careers, by providing the intellectual tools needed to understand and critically analyze real world issues, conduct research and develop solutions to complex problems.

Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to studying the historical, cultural, literary, and societal role of women and gender. UNBC’s program has strengths in areas such as women’s and gender history; gender, literature, and literary theory; gender, colonialism, and post colonialism; gender and globalization; feminism, justice, and ethics; gender and health; and gender and international studies.

Every organization needs to keep track of its financial operations and financial position. Accounting is concerned with the measurement, provision, interpretation and application of financial and economic information for the efficiency and evaluation of an organization’s operations. The information provided by the accounting function is employed for effective planning, control and decision making by management, and to report on the organization’s financial operations to shareholders, debtholders, government and other stakeholders of the firm.

Finance involves evaluating profitability and valuing real investments such as capital projects, as well as financial securities such as stocks, bonds, options and futures. In addition to the study of sources of capital and financing decisions of the firm and individual investors, the Finance major also studies the management of financial institutions such as banks and trust companies.

The General Business major allows students to obtain a reasonable depth of knowledge in all the functional areas of business while maintaining a broad-based education in business management. This combination provides the integrative management skills to operate both within and across functional responsibility areas, an ability valued highly by employers.

In recent years the importance of an international perspective for Business students has increased as a result of the increasing globalization of the economy. The International Business major exposes students to the impact of the international environment on the functional areas of business management.

Management Information Systems is about using information systems to provide value to organizations. Students in this field have the opportunity to acquire the skills to use, analyze, and manage information systems to succeed in the business world. A major in Management Information Systems provides skills that include: designing information systems for businesses; using data to find lucrative opportunities for firms; and determining users’ computing needs.

Marketing refers to the set of activities needed to find, build, and serve markets for products and services. Students of marketing will acquire analytical tools from economics, mathematics, statistics and the social and behavioural sciences. A major in Marketing is useful for such positions as account representatives, brand managers, advertising executives and market researchers.

The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Biology B.Sc. Program combines the rigour of chemistry with the fascination of living systems, and is therefore the traditional major for students with biomedical interests. Majors begin their studies with a broad set of courses in the natural sciences. In the second year, biochemistry is introduced, leading to third year explorations of DNA, the blueprint of life, proteins, the machines that make our bodies work, and a wide range of other molecular topics.

From bacteria and archaea to plants, animals, and fungi, the subject is complex, fascinating, and vital to all of our lives. The UNBC Biology B.Sc. offers courses that cover scales ranging from molecules to ecosystems and it is administered by the Ecosystem Science and Management (ESM) Program.
