The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences has earned a reputation for its high-caliber teaching programs and its friendly, helpful staff. Students benefit not only from the expertise of staff in the Faculty, but also from the close proximity of other faculties on campus, federal research facilities, and a vibrant Winnipeg-based agricultural community.
Program Options
Agribusiness | Agribusiness is the business and economics of food. It focuses on all of the factors that influence how food travels around the globe, including finance, government policy, international trade, risk management, the environment, food safety, and regional development. |
Agroecology | Agroecology specializes in the management and conservation of our natural and agricultural resources. Agroecologists develop environmentally friendly weed, insect, and diseases controls and also help farmers conserve their land and protect Canada’s wildlife and water supply. |
Agronomy | Agronomy is the study and the practice of field crop production, and the management of land and water resources. It aims to meet the demands of producing food, feed, fuel, and bioproducts while maintaining a sustainable environment. |
Animal Systems | Animal Systems focuses on the nutrition, management, and welfare of livestock and poultry. Animal science professionals are committed to devising innovative solutions to challenges posed by a growing world population, shifting diet patterns, limited resources, and changing climatic conditions. |
Entomology (minor option) | Entomology is the study of insects, the most numerous and diverse animals on earth. Entomologists study insects to learn how they interact with their environment, whether it’s a crime scene or a farmer’s field. |
Food Science | Food scientists fuel the minds that feed the world. They study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and use their findings to develop the nutritious, delicious, and innovative food products that line supermarket shelves everywhere. |
Plant Biotechnology | Plant Biotechnology uses applied biology and chemistry to develop advanced knowledge of crop plants and their pathogens. Plant Biotechnologists develop new technologies for crop improvement. |
Soil Science | Soil Science is the study of the living land. The soil is a fundamental part of the environment and the basis for life in terrestrial environments. The soil also affects aquatic systems and the atmosphere through ecosystem interactions. Students interested in ecosystem function, whether natural or managed, will benefit from a solid background in soil science. |
