Introduction

The Human Resource Management and Labour Relations major is available at ULethbridge in Calgary only. This major will be offered on the Lethbridge Campus in 2026-2027.

As a human resources management and labour relations (HRMLR) professional, you’ll manage the greatest resource of organizations – its people! Competent, culturally sensitive and highly organized, HRMLR professionals add significant value and display competence in an array of specialized areas, including talent management, employment law, health and safety, performance management, training and development and diversity and inclusion.

With a major in HRMLR, you’ll be a strategic leader in your organization. You’ll be critical for the successful management of complex and constantly evolving environments and you’ll work with both employers and employees to create productive and fair workplaces.

In this major, you’ll study a broad range of topics including human behaviour, organizational change management, career development, managing in unionized environments, leadership, workplace safety and managing in diverse workplaces.

You can also choose a minor to enhance your knowledge in a secondary line of study. Many minors complement human resource management and labour relations well including family and small business management, Indigenous business management, mental health, marketing and sociology. Why take human resource management and labour relations (HRMLR) at the Dhillon School of Business?

Being an HRMLR major at the Dhillon School of Business has its advantages. Our HRMLR major is accredited by the Chartered Professional In Human Resources (CPHR). That means you can waive the CPHR National Knowledge Exam, a requirement for individual CPHR designation. You also only require three years of professional human resources experience to receive the full CPHR designation, whereas those who do not graduate with a degree from an accredited institution require eight years of experience.

Many of our students enrol in cooperative education while at the Dhillon School of Business. Co-op allows you to get paid work experience before you graduate and can even help you land a job immediately after graduation.

Note: Students should take Research Methodology (MGT 2700) as early as possible, as it provides a foundation for the senior-level courses. Because a wide variety of electives are offered, not all are offered every term. Plan with an academic advisor to ensure you can take all of the courses that interest you.
