Bachelor of Science in Systematic Biology and Ecology

Teaching activities and research work at the Department of Biology (DB) are focused on botanics and protection of the environment, biology and animal ecology, and experimental biology. The DB educates experts who can find a job in state institutions dealing with environment and protection of nature, in research and service laboratories focused on biology and ecology, in cultural and educational institutions focused on ecological education and scientific activities.

The Systematic Biology and Ecology degree programme is mainly focused on systematics and phylogenesis of plant and animal organisms and their ecology. Graduates gain necessary knowledge in general biological disciplines, e.g. cellular and molecular biology, the anatomy and morphology of plants, general zoology, systematics and phylogenesis of plants and animals, physiology and ecology of plants and animals, genetics and microbiology. The aim of practical activities in laboratories as well as field survey and experience is to extend students' knowledge and to turn theoretical knowledge into practical applications.

The research activities of the Department are supported by many indigenous and foreign grants, as well as by cooperation with a number of colleges and scientific establishments. Among the main research interests in botanics there are floristics and phytocenology, mapping and monitoring of vegetation, species protection and saving programmes for critically endangered species. Within a long-term cooperation with KRNAP (the Krkonoše Mountains National Park) researches on the Krkonoše tundra have been carried out. Zoological research activity deals with e.g. ecology of the hymenopterous sands and steppes, etology and nesting behaviour of birds, parasitism behaviour of ants and others. Experimental biology is focused on research in the influence of abiotic stresses on growth and development of plants, the use of plants in phytoremediation technology, biological monitoring of moulds and mycotoxins (determination of moulds and mycotoxins in food and the biomarkers of mycotoxins- metabolites of mycotoxins, in biological materials with the aim to minimize the impacts on public health and to implement the risk management).
