Introduction

BSc in First Year : Integration Cycle

The first year of a science and technology licence is a year of integration and orientation where students have a multi-disciplinary choice of courses before focusing on a more specialised course of study. Students can thus personalise their programmes of study through a certain number teaching units (TU) which are divided in the following manner:

  • Core TUs, which are obligatory and focused on the fundamental disciplines of the programme of study.
  • Initial TUs, which allows students to widen their scientific knowledge.
  • Cross-disciplinary TUs, to be chosen from methodology, scientific or general culture, project or language TUs.

The number of TUs varies each semester according to the programmes of study.

These programmes of study allows students to discover various disciplines and scientific subject areas and offers the possibility of easier refocus after a semester or at the end of first year.

Organization

The first year of the licence, called the ‘integration cycle, is composed of two independent semesters and are organised around three programmes of study.

Progression into L2 requires the acquisition of 60 ECTS.

The MIME programme of study

(mathematics, computer science, mechanics, electronics, informatics, electronics)

This opens the way to the study of mathematics, computer science, mechanics, electronics and physics.

First semester:

3 core TUs (2 in mathematics, computer science)
1 initial TU (to be chosen from physics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences)
1 TU in methodology and 1 TU in scientific or general culture

Second semester:

2 core TUs (mathematics, computer science)
2 initial TUs
1 language TU
1 TU for a science project

The PCME programme of study

(physics, chemistry, mechanics and electronics)

This opens the way to the study of physics, chemistry, mechanics and electronics.

First semester:

3 core TUs (mathematics, physics, chemistry)
1 initial TU (to be chosen from physics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences, mechanics, electronics)
1 TU in methodology
1 TU in scientific or general culture

Second semester:

2 core TUs (mathematics, physics)
2 initial TUs
1 language TU
1 TU for a science project

BGPC programme of study

(biology, geology, physics, chemistry) is geared toward biology, earth sciences and chemistry.

First semester:

4 core TUs (life sciences, chemistry, physics, earth sciences)
1 TU in methodology
1 TU in mathematical calculation

Second semester:

2 core TUs in mathematics
3 initial TUs
1 TU for a cultural or professional science project
1 language TU

Multimedia

UTES (l'Usage des Technologies Éducatives en Sciences – The Use of Educational Technologies in Sciences) is a multimedia resource centre that allows students to access for free online courses and self-evaluation tests.

Training of engineers

Students who wish to join Polytech’Paris-UPMC (the engineering school of UPMC) are invited to follow the advised curriculum of the MIME programme of study.

Integration and support of students

– A tutorial before the start of the academic year is held at the end of August in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.

– In the core TUs, a tutorial, which can be in various forms depending on the disciplines, is offered to students in difficulty (repetition of the course and around 10 students, workshops at UTES).

– In addition, personalised follow-up teaching for students is organised for the duration of the two semesters with a guidance teacher.

– For certain disciplines, oral interviews are held.

– These classes also concern foreign students with a poor command of French or who wish to take a different direction in their studies.

Well-targeted public

This integration year for the science and technology licence is mainly intended for those who have a bac S. Those with STI (sciences et technologies industrielles) and STL (sciences et technologies de laboratoire) baccalauréats are also accepted in special classes with schedules that mainly reinforce mathematics. Working students and high-level athletes can join classes with schedules that are adjusted for certain TUS in the different programmes of study.
