Introduction

The Bachelor of Music Educationdegree programcombines an outstanding faculty with a challenging curriculum designed to develop the professional competencies necessary for a successful career as a music educator. The B.M.E. degree is offered with two areas of concentration – instrumental or vocal – and is designed to prepare students for K-12 music certification in Arkansas.

Students who choose to major or minor in music have generally have been active in music programs throughout their lives. They are students who demonstrate the talent, skills, and ability necessary to succeed as professional musicians or educators. The study of music allows students to express themselves in ways that written or spoken word cannot.

While the study of music is a rewarding pursuit in and of itself, research has shown that students who study music often score higher on tests, demonstrate higher abstract reasoning skills, and have less text or performance anxiety.

Unlike study in other academic disciplines, students who wish to major in music must possess a level of proficiency in their chosen instrument and complete an audition before being accepted as a music major.

There is an application process for the Bachelor of Music Education degrees, and admission requirements may change over time. Students must meet admission requirements current at their final application for admission to the Educator Preparation Program.
