Since its establishment in 1907, Tohoku University has established itself as an academic leader, producing a number of achievements under the spirit of Research First, the philosophy of Open Doors, and the policy of Practice-Oriented Research and Education.

Globalization and the rapid spread of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, have led to radical changes in the world's social and economic structures. As the 22nd president, I will do my best to ensure that Tohoku University meets the challenges of those changes by driving creativity, innovation, exploration, and discovery.

The Tohoku University Faculty of Education was established after World War II in May 1949 with the purpose of promoting educational research and instructor training. In May 1953, the Master’s and Doctoral Programs, comprising of the two majors, Pedagogy and Educational Psychology, were established, forming the Graduate School of Education.

Students in the Department of Electrical, Information and Physics Engineering, starting from a grounding in electrical, communications, electronic, and information engineering as well as in applied physics, engage in research in such areas as the supply and use of electrical energy, next-generation information, and communications systems, functional materials and devices making use of nanotechnologies, the application of electronics technologies to medical care and welfare, electric vehicles, intelligent robots, and plasma engine for outer space vehicles. Through their studies and experiences, they obtain the necessary research ability and knowledge for becoming leaders as core and specialized engineers.

Bachelor in Electrical, Information and Physics Engineering

The Department of Literature at Tohoku University was born from the Tōhoku Imperial University Faculty of Law and Literature, established in Katahira-chō, Sendai in 1922. A creation of the "Taishō Democracy" period that followed the First World War (1914-1918), the Department of Law gathered professors leading the work in modernizing the liberal arts, their lectures attracting the interest of not only students of the humanities, but also students studying education, law, and economics.
