Tourism and hospitality is a fast-paced industry, offering fantastic opportunities for mobility to professional and skilled practitioners.

Students in the Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality Management complete a 14-week internship as part of their studies and also have the opportunity to participate in an optional international exchange program in the second year, to build their experience abroad.

Whether you want to work in luxury travel, resorts, events, and entertainment or travel management, the course will prepare you with transferable skills for a career rich with diversity.

You will have the opportunity to specialize in event, hospitality or tourism management, underpinned by a foundation in business operations. You will have opportunities for field trips and networking with other people from the travel and hospitality industries, who will share your passion and may provide access to potential job opportunities.

Career Opportunities

Professional management positions in a range of tourism and hospitality operations including hotels and resorts; clubs and gaming operations; restaurants and catering; tourism destination planning and marketing; tourism policy development; ecotourism; visitor management; tourism retail management; tourist attractions and theme parks; conference and event operations.

Professional Placement

A compulsory internship program, which counts as four core units of the degree, provides students with a block of practical work experience during their final study session that involves working in a hospitality, event or tourism organization in Australia or overseas.

Students are responsible for securing their internship placement and are given extensive assistance in interview and application procedures, access to an extensive database of potential employers and roles and ongoing support from the dedicated Work Integrated Learning team.

Major Areas of Study

Students complete 16 core units and select one of the following majors:

  • Event Management

  • Hospitality Management

  • Tourism Management.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed in each unit on the basis of written and/or oral assignments. These may include researched essays, reports, presentations, case studies, portfolios, online discussions, tests, and exams, as well as interactive assessments such as blogs, wikis, online discussion boards and multi-media presentations. Students may also be asked to participate in group work as well as individual assignments. The weighting of assessment marks between assignments and examinations varies.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Our online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of a podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
