Introduction
How do you use robots in industrial applications? And how do you ensure that they can place something very precisely on the spot? You will learn it at Saxion's Mechatronics bachelor's degree programme. You will explore the world of robots, smart tools and innovative machines
Working on projects
Projects are common through the Mechatronics training. You use the knowledge you gain from the lectures within these projects. You work on a different project in groups in every quartile.
Collaborating with other programmes
You will be taught in the fields of electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and control engineering. This way you get a broad base.
Latest techniques
The Mechatronics programme is directly linked to the research group Smart Mechatronics and Robotics. As a result, you always participate in the latest developments in the field of Mechatronics. As a result, you also have many research opportunities.
During your study programme Mechatronics
Do you have a passion for technology? And do you like to design high-tech robotic systems? With your investigative, analytical and creative brain, you can easily enter this growing field. During the Mechatronics programme, you will learn how to design industrial and embedded systems and use them to build and program smart tools for home, healthcare or industry. Who knows, maybe you will design a new robot that helps with surgery!
Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
We are proud to offer scholarships to talented international students that apply for a bachelor or master Program at Saxion University of Applied Sciences.
Saxion Scholarships Program
Over the years we developed several scholarships that are available for talented international bachelor and master students from outside the EU/EEA.
- Orange Tulip Scholarship Program (OTS)
- Orange Knowledge Program (OKP)
- MENA Scholarship Program (MSP)
- Holland Scholarship (HS)
Other Scholarships
Further information on how and where to apply for a scholarship is available at the nearest Royal Netherlands Embassy, or from the Dutch Education Organization NUFFIC.
Curriculum
The study programme of the mechatronics degree programme is multifaceted. You will work with the basic techniques, work with fellow students on various projects and you will do an internship in the third year.
The First Year
Developing your first own system
At the end of the first year of Mechatronics, you are ready to design, realize and test your own robot or smart system! You use knowledge about mechanical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering. You will also receive lessons in programming industrial (sorting) systems, go into the workshop and design and solder your own electrical parts.
Subjects year 1
- Measuring and transforming signals
- System Analysis
- Producing and Testing mechanical setups
- Physical Modeling
- Verification of design requirements
- Setting up Technical Design documentation
The Second Year
Merging the different disciplines
The second year of Mechatronics is all about bringing together mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and control engineering in a product or system. For example, you are going to design a robotic arm or other system that does exactly what you want. You can set the precise movements with control technology.
Subjects year 2
- Actuation and Dynamics
- Projects in designing, building and testing Mechatronic systems
- Digital Control theory
- Robotics and Vision Practicals
- Applying Systems Engineering
The Third Year
Internship and Smart Solution Semester
In the third year of your Mechatronics programme, you will work at a company and work together with other students on the Smart Solutions project. Here you will learn to work together on case studies from the industry with students from other fields, such as Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics and Industrial Product Design. Exactly as you will do in the field later.
The Fourth Year
Minor and graduation project
In the first half of the fourth year, you will follow a minor of your choice. The Mechatronics programme offers a minor in Robotics and Vision, but you can also choose other subjects. You conclude your education with a graduation assignment at a company.

Career Opportunities
After completing your Mechatronics study you can go in all directions. For example, you can work at engineering firms, automation companies, and machine factories, or in the semiconductor industry.
As a mechatronic engineer, you design and improve products, systems, and machines. You are the person who innovates, designs, builds, and tests systems for the industry.
Professions
- Researcher
- Systeem designer
- Component designer
- System integrator
- Tester
What kinds of companies can you work at?
After your Mechatronics study, you can work in the automotive and semiconductor industry, where, for example, devices are made that require chips and microprocessors. You are also valuable in healthcare, designing products or machines for rehabilitation and simple operations, for example. Finally, you can work at various mechatronics companies, such as Demcon, IMS, Norma, Viro Engineering, and Thales.
