Introduction
Do you want to make a difference with technical smart solutions and innovations? In the Mechanical Engineering (ME) program, you will learn everything about designing, analyzing, manufacturing, and technically improving products, machinery, and structures. As a mechanical engineer, you will be challenged to develop innovative technologies and processes that minimize the impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Design, sustainable energy, and industrial automation
The study of Mechanical Engineering is closely collaborating with the Saxion electorates Lightweight Construction, Sustainable Energy, and Mechatronics. During your studies, you can choose to specialize in one of these topics.
Group work with Smart Solutions
During the Smart Solutions Semester, you will be working together with students of other Saxion studies in company assignments from the industry. You will gain knowledge of other (technical) disciplines and learn a lot about communication and collaboration.
During your study program
You will learn everything you need to know about the design, manufacture, and technical improvement of products, machines, and structures. You will take courses in communication, project management, and research. By creating concepts for your design, you will achieve a complete and final design of your product. You will use software such as SolidWorks, C++, and Matlab.
Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
We are proud to offer scholarships to talented international students that apply for a bachelor or master Program at Saxion University of Applied Sciences.
Saxion Scholarships Program
Over the years we developed several scholarships that are available for talented international bachelor and master students from outside the EU/EEA.
- Orange Tulip Scholarship Program (OTS)
- Orange Knowledge Program (OKP)
- MENA Scholarship Program (MSP)
- Holland Scholarship (HS)
Other Scholarships
Further information on how and where to apply for a scholarship is available at the nearest Royal Netherlands Embassy, or from the Dutch Education Organization NUFFIC.
Curriculum
Mechanical Engineering has a focus on technical courses in mechanics, fluid dynamics and materials science. In addition, courses will be followed on the design and production of products, machines, and constructions. Courses on cost calculation and personal development complete the programme.
The First Year
Broad technical foundation and practical experience
The first year includes courses like statistics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and manufacturing technology. In addition, your presentation and reporting skills will be improved by applying your new technical knowledge to practical projects. These projects, combined with company presentations and visits, will give you insights into the working field of a Mechanical Engineer.
Subjects year 1
- Statics
- Mechanics of materials
- Materials science and manufacturing technology
- Sketching and 3D modelling
- Machine elements
- Programming
- Fluid Mechanics
- Heat Transfer
- Projects
The Second Year
Enhancing technical knowledge for projects
The second year will be a mix of understanding energy systems, material selection, automation and robotics, drive technology, control theory, mathematical modelling thermodynamics and design projects. Your knowledge obtained in these courses will be applied to projects regarding methodical design and sustainable design.
Subjects year 2
- Dynamics
- Material selection
- Automation and robotics
- Drive technology
- Control theory
- Mathematical modelling
- Thermodynamics
- Sustainable energy systems
- Projects
The Third Year
Make your own choices
The third year consists of a minor and the Smart Solutions Semester (3S). Within the minor, you will improve your technical knowledge in a specific area, such as Advanced Material Production Engineering or Engineering of Energy Systems. Within 3S you will work with a group of students with a different study background in solving problems from the working field.
The Fourth Year
Preparation for working in Engineering
The fourth year consists of an internship and graduation. The internship will take place within an engineering company of your interest. During the graduation project, a design or research assignment will be conducted within Saxion or an engineering company of your interest.

Career Opportunities
With a Bachelor of Science title, you can enter a high-tech and innovative working field. You will find yourself in the center of the Dutch production industry: Twente is one of the largest technical production regions within the Netherlands.
Professions for Mechanical Engineers
When the choice for Mechanical Engineering is made it is guaranteed that a corresponding profession can be found quickly. The working field is in a significant need of graduates with a background in Mechanical Engineering. Most of the graduates already signed up for a job when they are graduating or will do so shortly after. Examples of typical professions in the Mechanical Engineering working field:
Professions
- As a Constructor
- Designer
- Developer
- Technical Advisor
- Project lead
What kinds of companies can you work at?
After your graduation, there are multiple companies in the Mechanical Engineering field where you can find a job, either large- or small-scale companies. Examples are VDL, Thales, DSM, Stork, Philips, etc. In addition, many smaller (local) companies focus on engineering. Many students also pursue their career in engineering and project management companies like VIRO or Tebodin. When research & development is more of your interest you could find a job at research institutes like KEMA or TNO.
Job guarantee
Many students are already in the possession of a job offer directly after graduation. Therefore Mechanical Engineering has a very good job perspective.
