Introduction

The Bachelor of Recording Arts is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the audio and music industries, incorporating the development of creative skills and research methods necessary in today’s highly competitive industry environment.

Apart from furthering the development of music production skills relevant to commercial and non-commercial music markets, this stage also develops the understanding of relevant aspects of business management and legal matters as well as communication and research skills.

You will meet high profile industry professionals up close to small workshops and seminars who can give you an insight into their perspectives, and share their knowledge and experience. This degree is research-based, opening the way to the highest levels of academic education (master's and Ph.D.). SAE has a number of pathways into several programmes of study in New Zealand and overseas.

The Diploma in Audio Engineering forms year one of this three-year programme. It is a very practical, hands-on experience right from the start, and involves workplace scenarios where you will learn technical and operative skills, project workflow and management, documentation and communication with clients and other industry professionals.

The second year focuses on expanding your views of the creative industries and the business and legal environment you will be operating in. You will have an opportunity to study the commercial conditions of your chosen industry while learning from people who are actively engaged in the industry at the highest levels. You will also engage in cultural studies with an emphasis on historical developments in New Zealand and overseas.

The third year is a structured opportunity to deepen your understanding of media communication, working and communicating in teams as well as educational aspects of the industry. You will also choose a specific area of specialization that you would like to deepen your understanding of and develop expertise in. Your research into this area will then come to fruition in your final research project.
