Introduction

Chemistry is one of the fields in the forefront of the current technological revolution and, as such, it plays a crucial role in solving many of the problems faced by today’s society. Chemists work in all facets of life including the development of new drugs for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, the creation of better methods for the production of food, clothing, and shelters, and the discovery of environment-friendly energy sources. They also work on solving problems such as acid rain, ozone depletion, and climate change.

The Bachelor of Science program in chemistry is available for students who intend to pursue graduate studies, secondary school teaching, or a professional career in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry. The programs provide a strong background in the modern areas of chemistry with emphasis on hands-on laboratory work. They also provide the opportunity for exceptionally talented students to conduct independent research under the guidance of the faculty. The program also prepares students for further education in health, environmental sciences, and biotechnology.

Program Goals

I. General Goals:

  1. Provide rigorous education in the fundamental areas of chemical knowledge and experimentation. The program is sufficiently flexible in its electives to provide excellent preparation for careers in many different areas of chemistry.
  2. Provide the local society with high-quality professionals to participate in the development of local chemical and related industries by enhancing the quality and solving problems that face the industry sector.

II. Specific Goals:

  1. To provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge in different pure and applied chemistry fields.
  2. To provide students with all skills that enable them to deal with problems and issues related to their specialty and give innovative solutions to these problems.
  3. To provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for teaching chemistry in schools.
  4. To give students a solid background to be able to continue their graduate studies in fields related to chemistry, or be actively involved in scientific research.
  5. To provide students with various soft skills such as communication skills, adaptability, teamwork, collaboration, problem-solving, and critical observation.

The four-year study program of applied chemistry includes theoretical and practical courses in different fields of pure, applied, and industrial chemistry. The program is designed to meet the modern international and educational requirements and the needs of the local society by providing highly qualified graduates in chemical, food, and related industries. After getting the bachelor's degree in applied chemistry at PPU, graduates of this program are able to find jobs in a wide spectrum of professions in the related fields, such as:

  1. Production sectors in chemical, pharmaceutical food, and other industries (plastic, cosmetics, etc.)
  2. Quality control units in related industries.
  3. Trade companies dealing with chemical equipment, etc.
  4. Governmental sectors in ministries of health, industry, and environment.
  5. Research institutes and units
  6. Teaching in schools.

The applied chemistry program is constructed with a special quantitative and qualitative emphasis on practical courses and projects. They provide students with the required technical and research skills and enable them to use the most modern chemical and analytical equipment in their future careers.
