Program Outcome
The course has a triple objective: to provide a solid basic education in essential mathematics for risk assessment, to recognize the student with a degree that allows him to be immediately integrated into the job market and the knowledge necessary to progress to more advanced cycles of studies, as is a Masters or PhD in Applied Mathematics. The Master in Mathematics and Applications, taught by the Mathematics Department of FCT NOVA, provides specializations in Actuarial Science, Statistics and Operational Research and also in Financial Mathematics, accessible to graduates in Mathematics Applied to Risk Management. In the academic year 2021/22, the 2nd cycle in Actuarial Mathematics will start operating.
LMAGR differs from other academic offers, both local and national, due to its architecture in accordance with internationally recognized requirements for professionals in risk analysis. The focus is on applied mathematics, complemented by knowledge of economics and information technology, which are understood as essential to the identification, quantification, mitigation and management of risks, namely in financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies.
The NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA, which has long been a national reference in the training of actuaries, favors interdisciplinarity, which is much sought after, not only for its scientific interest, but also for the demand of the job market. This course has a group of professors with long experience in training professionals in the area of risk, most of them occupying prominent positions in entities and companies of reference, both nationally and internationally. The Department of Mathematics has maintained excellent relationships with companies/employers, including Research projects, facilitating the involvement of students in internships, and offering its students the possibility of studying abroad, under the Erasmus+ program, in one of the several DM partner Universities, with full academic recognition.
