Program Outcome
Mathematics is a science that serves as the basis for all scientific and technological areas and also for economic and social sciences.
The main objective of the degree is to provide a solid basic education in Mathematics, balanced in its various aspects. It is intended that this training provides the necessary foundations to pursue studies in the areas of Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Educational Mathematics.
As an example of areas that can be developed in subsequent study cycles, and in accordance with the specific skills of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at FCT NOVA, we mention: Actuarial Work; Algebra and Logic; Numerical Analysis and Differential Equations; Operations Research and Optimization; Probability and Statistics; Financial Mathematics; Data Science; Educational Mathematics.
Statistics is the art of extracting information. It has applications, among others, to market studies, design and interpretation of experiences.
Operational Research aims at creating models that allow the study of complex systems and the optimization of resource use.
The purpose of Actuarial Science is to study risk (life risk, risk of accidents, stock market risk).
Differential Equations and their numerical treatment are the basis of modern Physics and Engineering; they are still present in many biological, social and economic processes.
Algebra and Logic, as fundamental areas of Mathematics, are also largely responsible for the development of Informatics and recent computational techniques.
Financial Mathematics, supported by theoretical, numerical and statistical mathematical foundations, is focused on the study and creation of suitable models for the financial industry.
Data Science is an emerging area, essential to most companies, which seeks to extract knowledge from large volumes of data, with formats that are often heterogeneous and often poorly structured.
Educational Mathematics aims to train teachers for Basic and Secondary Education.
It should be noted that the Degree in Mathematics at FCT NOVA has two optional subjects in the 3rd year of its curriculum: Introduction to Scientific Research in Mathematics Program and Introduction to Professional Practice in Mathematics Program. The first provides a first contact with scientific research practices in Mathematics. The second consists of a small internship in a business environment.
