Introduction
With strong foundations in sociological research and theory, you'll learn about the self and society, and the importance of institutions, interactions, and inequalities in social life.
Academic Opportunities
Research
Sociology majors are strongly encouraged to undertake an Honors Project and/or a SOAR Research Project. These research projects are often combined with the student’s major or minor. Moravian University also actively encourages students to apply for Fulbright Scholarships.
Study Abroad
Numerous students pursuing majors and minors in sociology and/or anthropology have enrolled in Moravian University's semester abroad program to add an international dimension to their sociology education.
Sophomore year is the perfect time for an optional short-term study abroad opportunity, or, as Moravian likes to call it, a “Global Greyhound Trip.” The Elevate experience includes a trip to one of our featured destinations—the Czech Republic or Costa Rica—at no extra cost to students!
Internships
The Sociology and Anthropology Department internship is available as an elective course for the major. The course requires 160 hours on-site as well as weekly classroom meetings. Sociology majors have interned at the following sites:
- Bethlehem Police Department
- Holy Family Manor
- Kids Peace
- Lehigh County District Attorney's Office
- Moravian University Campus Safety
- New Jersey State Police
- PA Board of Probation and Parole
- Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley
- And more!

Curriculum
A student may select either the general sociology program or the law and society program.
Sociology
Designed to prepare students for a wide range of professional careers and advanced study, this track is a particularly useful background for careers in education, human services, social policy, business, or the media.
Sociology (Criminal Justice and Law)
Designed for students with an interest in careers in the legal profession or other aspects of the justice system, as well as for the kinds of advanced study expected of professionals in those fields.
Core Courses:
- SOC 115: Introductory Sociology
- SOC 246: Basic Research Methods
- SOC 335: Sociological Theory
- SOC 346: Advanced Research in Sociology or SOC 347: Advanced Research in Anthropology
- SOC 258: Power and Conflict or SOC 355: Sociology of Gender, or SOC 357: Race and Ethnicity
In addition to the five sociology core courses, students take four other courses. For those following the criminal justice and law track, one of these courses must be SOC 216 (Crime, Law, and Justice). Of the other courses, for students following both tracks, at least one of which must be at the 300 level. These remaining courses should be chosen in careful consultation with the student's advisor.
Scholarships and Funding
Scholarships up to USD 25,000
Moravian University offers an International Student Merit Award based primarily on academic achievement: grades, the strength of your academic program, your TOEFL or IELTS scores, and your SAT scores if submitted.
Career Opportunities
Because sociology is interdisciplinary, there are many available jobs and careers available to those with a degree in sociology. Students who major in sociology find careers in fields such as counseling, education, social services, law, government, business, management, communications, and health services. Opportunities expand for those who receive graduate degrees in sociology or a related discipline.
