The Bachelor of Arts music major provides students with a broad foundation for studying, performing, and communicating about music. The major includes core classes in music theory and history, applied instruction, and ensemble involvement within a Liberal Arts context. Students have a great deal of flexibility in determining their possible minors or may choose to double major in a number of other disciplines. Graphic design is much more than a visual solution but rather a creative process for solving problems. That’s the approach the Department of Art and Design takes as Graphic Design students learn to use art and technology to convey ideas. Graduates should acquire formal, technical, and conceptual skills necessary for an entry-level position in the graphic design industry. In addition to the graphic design curriculum, class options range from interactive design to book arts. The four graphic design computer labs are equipped with state-of-the-art Apple computers and software.

MTSU's growing art department offers a wide variety of studio options with an emphasis on ceramics, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Art majors are exposed to cross-disciplinary projects and collaborations in both traditional and non-traditional materials with the ability to experiment in today's ever-evolving art fields. Upgrades to the completely renovated, three-floor Andrew L. Todd Hall feature state-of-the-art master classrooms, studios, and equipment. The department also regularly invites local and regional artists and nationally and internationally known artists to exhibit in the Todd Art Gallery, conduct workshops, and lecture in numerous classes.

Students interested in combining mathematics and business coursework for an Actuarial Science degree can pursue a newly emerging career with well-paying jobs in high demand. This special discipline trains students to apply mathematical skills and statistical techniques to manage risks and solve problems in insurance and pension programs. MTSU is the only university in Tennessee that offers actuarial science coursework for both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The Advertising concentration at MTSU offers preparation for diverse advertising careers. Students learn to write, design and create materials for a variety of media from print to digital through courses focusing on the creative side.

Aviation safety depends on communication between pilots and dispatchers—those individuals who, along with air carrier pilots, share joint responsibility for safe operational control of company flights. The Flight Dispatch concentration is designed to meet industry demands and leads to FAA Aircraft Dispatch certification. With a superior reputation, the program has graduates that dispatch for every regional and major airline. Students receive extensive training in dispatch operations with an emphasis on the importance of operational control between the dispatcher and pilot in command.

An important aspect of the aerospace industry is maintenance management, the part of the industry that keeps aircraft flying! This concentration offers preparation for students wishing to enter the aviation maintenance field as practicing maintenance technicians or as entry-level managers at aircraft repair stations or other types of operations involving aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, or modification.

MTSU has a rich history of teaching students to fly, dating back to WWII when flight training took place right on campus. Today, graduates from the Professional Pilot program fly for every major US airline, at dozens of regional airlines, and for corporations and government agencies. To prepare for these opportunities, Pro Pilot students must complete flight operations coursework and achieve pilot certification up to and including the Commercial Multi-engine Certificate with an Instrument Rating.

The Aerospace Technology program offers preparation for students who want to pursue advanced study at the graduate level. The curriculum includes a rigorous lineup of coursework in mathematics, the sciences, engineering technology, and the more technical courses in aerospace. The concentration’s curriculum requires the completion of minors in Mathematics and Engineering Technology, two semesters of computer programming and calculus-based physics, and the completion of a senior research project.

MTSU’s new Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations concentration, within the B.S. in Aerospace degree, is the first of its kind in the state and one of only a handful in the United States. Students will prepare for thousands of new jobs created in many industries as unmanned aircraft systems become a major fixture in the future of aviation worldwide.
