Introduction
Why Mansfield?
We get you ready for a career with hands-on opportunities and personalized advising. If you want to be a name and not a number, MU is the place for you. We truly believe in educating through involvement and learning through experience. The applied nature of our program focuses on involvement in WNTE, MUTV, PRSSA, Athletics, advanced research projects, and professional internships. And our relationship with alumni and the local community provide you with connections and insights that expand on classroom learning.
Our Communication major lets you tailor your courses by selecting one of four concentrations:
Organizational Communication Concentration
The Organizational Communication concentration prepares students to enter professions such as human resources, patient advocacy, management, retail, sales, and admissions. The concentration prepares students to interact in relationships and to communicate effectively in small groups and in the workplace. Attention is given to effective gender communication, nonverbal communication, persuasion, cross-cultural communication, and business and professional communication.
Electronic Media Concentration
The Electronic Media concentration prepares students for careers in electronic media: writing, audio and video production, management and sales, on-air talent, law, and advertising. It offers a rigorous curriculum in which students design, write, edit, and create their own radio and television programs. Students practice their skills in the Allen Hall Studios. Students can take their talent and get involved in the campus radio station and/or television station. WNTE and MUTV broadcast to the campus and the local community.
Public Relations Concentration
The Public Relations concentration prepares students to enter PR professions in industry: Entertainment, Education, Music, Politics, Global, Corporate, and Nonprofit, positions such as PR Firm Executive, PR Director, Publicist, Special Events Planner, and work in Crisis Management, Media Relations, Community Relations, Advertising, Social Media, and Marketing Communication. Students design and develop a variety of communication materials for specific audiences.
Sports Information Concentration
The Sports Information concentration prepares students to coordinate communication between athletic departments, student-athletes, and coaches as well as disseminate information to the news media and the general public. Sports information professionals write a variety of communication material, produce video segments, coordinate interviews with the media, compile statistics, and update social media/digital communication.
