The aim of the degree is to equip students with the skills, knowledge and experience required for a broad range of careers within public sector organisations. The course concentrates on practical work-based skills and knowledge as well as academic and professional competencies which were

The honours degree top-up year provides an academic and theoretical understanding to a range of modules that are core knowledge requirements for future public sector workers. There is a concentration on the development of leadership and problem-solving skills in each of the modules. The degree has close employer links, and course content is regularly updated to keep abreast of current trends and changes in public sector organisations and delivery. The degree is staffed by tutors with recent relevant industry experience.

The course is made up of the following modules:

  • Research skills, ethics and practice
  • Independent research project or literature review

The research dissertation will equip students with in-depth knowledge of modern research techniques. The dissertation could be a research project commissioned by a relevant organisation.

- Community cohesion

The module teaches this fundamental concept which is an essential requirement for modern public service employment.

- Equality, diversity, rights and social justice

This module focuses on gaining a thorough understanding of equalities legislation and current practice in public services provision and employment.

- New directions in public service

The module provides a wider and contextual understanding of existing and emerging forms of management and delivery of public services.

- Crime and criminal justice

Knowledge of crime and Criminal Justice is an essential requirement for students wishing to work within the broad range of criminal justice organisations. These include police, probation, prison, border agency, intervention charities and employment organisations.

The Degree has a variety of different assessments. This includes essays, presentations, coursework, problem-solving case studies, self-evaluation, peer review and exams and research evaluation. Tutorial support is an important aspect of the degree structure.
