Curriculum
The International Civil Engineering program combines an undergraduate civil engineering degree with foreign language skills and international experience. This means that some courses are taught in English and you will spend a year studying at one of our partner universities abroad.
Basic Studies
In the first section (1st and 2nd semester) you will learn the mathematical and technical basics of civil engineering. In addition to the basics of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, this also includes the subjects of technical mechanics, hydromechanics, building informatics and building construction.
Core Studies
In the second section (3rd and 4th semester), you will deal with the core topics of civil engineering. These consist of structural engineering subjects such as structural analysis, solid construction, and steel construction, construction management subjects such as construction process engineering and international project management, environmental subjects such as traffic infrastructure/urban planning and urban water management, as well as the interdisciplinary subjects of geotechnics and sustainable built environment.
Semester Abroad and Bachelor's Thesis
In the third stage (5th or 6th semester), you will complete your year of study abroad (tuition-free) at one of our partner universities abroad. The choice of partner university depends on your interests, both in terms of the country and the courses offered at the partner university.
At the partner university, you can choose the modules as freely as possible and thus create your own profile. The modules you choose should come from the categories of structural engineering, infrastructure, sustainable construction, geotechnics, or construction management. During your year abroad, you will gain valuable experience in a different culture, apply what you have learned in project work, and write your academic Bachelor's thesis.
With the Bachelor's thesis, you provide proof that you can independently work on a specific task using scientific methods within a specified period of time.
Practical Project
The 7th semester is an internship semester, which you can complete at home or abroad. It enables you to gain practical experience, clarify your career goals, and make important contacts.
By applying theoretical knowledge in the real world of work, you not only strengthen your professional skills but also develop important soft skills such as teamwork and independence.

Career Opportunities
As a graduate of the bachelor's degree program in International Civil Engineering, a broad range of professional prospects are open to you. The construction and foreign language competency you have acquired enable you to work in the traditional occupational fields in the construction industry, in medium-sized construction companies, in engineering companies focusing on design and planning, and in public building administration. In addition, new lines of work are emerging at globally operating companies and organizations.
Even when the economic fluctuation of the international construction sector is factored in, work in the construction industry remains oriented toward the future and is characterized by a high level of market stability.
Students enrolled in International Civil Engineering at the University of Mainz with a second SIUE degree can obtain a civil engineering license in the states of Illinois and Missouri. In addition, they can participate in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program that allows them to work in the United States for another 18 months after graduation.
