Introduction
WHY LEEDS?
It takes hard work and initiative to make it in today's fast-moving music industry – which is why the BA (Hons) Classical pathway at Leeds College of Music focuses on equipping you with the tools and experience required to sustain a portfolio career.
Built around a mixture of one-to-one tuition, small-ensemble work, and seminars, this is a contemporary, highly performance-based course. Whether you choose to specialize in Classical or combine it with any of our other pathways – Jazz, Popular Music or Music Production – you will develop into a fine specialist performer or composer with the commercial skills to earn a living in a highly competitive field.
Our BA (Hons) Music (Business) pathway is unique amongst conservatoires and will prepare you for a dynamic career in the modern multiplatform music industry. Taught in a conservatoire environment, with a focus on one-to-one tuition, small group study and with mentoring by current music industry experts, you will learn the skills you need to become successful, self-sufficient and entrepreneurial in a variety of areas in the music industry.
Following the Conservatoire model, you will have the opportunity to choose a specialism (for example, management, record label ownership, artist development, live music management) to focus on throughout your three years, enabling you to enter the industry with your own fully formed enterprise.
Access to students on our other pathways (Classical Music, Jazz, Popular Music, Production) supplies a creative environment of conservatoire-standard musicians, songwriters, artists and producers for you to collaborate and create networks with.
YOUR TUTORS BA (Hons) students receive 120 hours of specialist tuition across three years, meaning you gain invaluable insights into the music industry from professionals who have first-hand experience of working within it.
Curriculum
THE COURSE
The music industry of 2014 is fundamentally different from the industry that began in the 50s and grew to its commercial peak in the late 80s. This course, delivered through one-to-one tuition, lectures, blended learning, and supported by virtual environments, reflects the revolutionary way that music is now made, listened to, and distributed by digital networks and social media. In the conservatoire environment, you will be introduced to key business functions of the contemporary music industry, including digital distribution, management, artist development, and live music management; and receive mentoring from industry professionals in those areas in order to achieve excellence in your chosen specialism.
You will develop your skills in marketing (PR, planning, consumer behavior, social media), law (copyright, management contracts, intellectual property), and management (e-commerce, strategy, project management) and also have the opportunity to extend your business and entrepreneurship skills by taking options in music tuition, music journalism leading or community music.
In your second year, you will also undertake a work placement, which will allow you to develop your skills in the context of employment and start building up your own bespoke network of contacts.
Your final year will focus on putting your skills into practice in real-life entrepreneurial projects, including starting a record label in a small group and realizing a small start-up enterprise in your chosen specialism.
MASTERCLASSES Each semester we have a number of internationally-renowned music industry figures, musicians, and producers visiting the conservatoire to work with our students. Their workshops and masterclasses present amazing opportunities to hear from creative music practitioners who are at the top of their game. Details of our masterclasses can be found here.
