Introduction
The Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.) is an intensive four-year program designed for students interested in exploring Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation in addition to areas such as sciences, humanities, and other subjects in the college of liberal arts and sciences. As B.M.A. candidates, students will take fifty percent of their classes in music, and fifty percent in the college of liberal arts and sciences. Lawrence University does not require a classical audition as part of the application requirements to the B.M.A. program.
The Bachelor of Musical Arts degree allows you to focus primarily on music in a professional degree program that is founded upon principles of liberal education. You can major in performance, music education, or theory/composition. About two-thirds of your classes will be in music, including lessons, classes such as music theory and history, and ensembles, while non-music classes will comprise the remaining third of your studies. As a result, you will receive a well-rounded education along with musical instruction of the highest quality, preparing you well for the challenges and opportunities of life in the 21st century.
The Lawrence University Conservatory serves around 350 highly engaged, enthusiastic, and passionate students. With three degrees, four majors, two areas of emphasis, two minors, twenty-six studios, and nine large ensembles there is a multitude of ways to sculpt a musical life at Lawrence.
Our mission and vision drive everything that we do here, and it is because of this expansive foundation that the Lawrence Conservatory is consistently ranked one of the top in the nation, with growing applications and graduates who go on to change the face of the musical world, again.

Curriculum
Five-year B.A. and B.Mus. double-degree program
Lawrence offers a combined B.A./B.Mus. degree program, an innovative course of study that allows you to immerse yourself in music and at least one other field of study at a very high level. In this rigorous five-year program, about half your coursework will be in music, with the other half in general education courses and a second major. The combination of a nationally ranked liberal arts college with a leading conservatory of music makes Lawrence's double-degree program a unique opportunity to pursue both musical and non-musical interests at a very high level in a collaborative environment. Each incoming double degree student meets with two advisors (one from the Conservatory and one from the College). Students and advisors work collaboratively in order to help plan a successful course of study. Our double-degree program is so successful because all of our professors see such great value in the dual course of study. If you choose the double degree program, you won't be alone. About half of every entering the Conservatory class are double degree students.
Music for all
At Lawrence, we believe that music is a birthright. This means that no matter who you are or what circumstances you are in you have the right to experience and participate in creating music. Music for All is the product of this mindset and is the umbrella which houses all our outreach programs.
Through the Music for All initiative, we strive to expand the impact of music outside of the concert hall, by bringing music into the community to engage the audience in new ways and often to get them involved in the music-making process itself. Using music to build bridges we challenge students to think outside the box, to create new and innovative performance opportunities for themselves, to engage with their craft in new and expansive ways.
Through all this, we lay the groundwork for them to create a musical life after Lawrence which suits their needs exactly, and is not simply a replica of what some might think is the life of a professionally trained musician.
Music for All is exactly what it sounds like; music, for everyone. Regardless of color, age, orientation, or ability. Music creating connections between people, expansive, inclusive, collective community creative collaboration.
