Introduction
The Degree Program in Mechanical Engineering prepares you for an international career in the fields of machine and automation design, production planning, and research and development.
The LAB University of Applied Sciences is an active partner in the forest cluster and metal industry, and we meet the requirements of the local and global industry as well as business life. The graduates of the program will work as technological experts, managers, designers, developers, and sales engineers in the metal and forest industries, automation, and information technology in Finland.
At LAB, you will study mechanical engineering in an international environment. To facilitate your adaptation to the new learning environment and processes, we will arrange an individual orientation consultation with you to prepare your personalized curriculum. Some studies will be carried out in co-operation with LUT University.
Every student has a chance to participate in student exchange in one of our partner universities. Graduates may continue their studies at the Master’s level at LUT University.
Curriculum
Study contents
Students learn how to design, develop and manufacture products and mechatronics equipment, design and dimension machine elements, develop modern automation, control, and information systems, act as project managers or leaders of individuals and larger teams, communicate, work and negotiate with people having a different cultural and linguistic background.

Qualification
The earned qualification is an undergraduate degree (a bachelor’s degree). After earning the degree, you can apply for work in private sector businesses as well as public sector organizations that require an applicable university degree.
More about the language of instruction
All the studies will be conducted in English. Students may choose a few courses conducted in Finnish.
Thesis
The bachelor’s degree program includes a 15-ECTS thesis. This can either be a research-based project or a so-called functional thesis project. The thesis project aims to broaden and deepen your professional expertise and knowledge and provide you with the expertise needed to operate in development tasks in your field. The thesis project improves information retrieval and problem-solving skills.
The thesis can be conducted as a project commissioned by an external organization or as part of a development project. The thesis project can be carried out individually, in pairs, or in a group, including a written report. At its best, the thesis project can serve as a pathway to your future career.
