Introduction
B.A. in Biotechnology program offers the choice of two specializations:
- Industrial Biotechnology;
- Environmental Biotechnology.
B.A. in Biotechnology is designed to produce graduates who meet employers' needs and are able to take full advantage of the rapidly changing and expanding arena of biotechnology and commerce. Career opportunities for our graduates include working as:
- biotechnology laboratory technician, microbiologist, biochemist, geneticist, biologist, quality control analyst, medical and clinical laboratory technician, the specialist in environmental monitoring;
- researcher in environmental protection agencies and departments of natural resources management or working with public health officials, etc.
Biotechnology graduates:
- can progress to MA programs (e.g. in Biotechnology or Microbiology);
- are equipped with a variety of transferable skills that are demanded on the labor market.
Skills acquired by Biotechnology graduates
Professional skills
- basic knowledge of biochemistry and biology, laboratory techniques and research tools used in biotechnology;
- expertise in the use of laboratory equipment (e.g. automatic micropipette, centrifuge, vortex mixer, spectrophotometer, chromatograph, transilluminator, radiometric test equipment, optical microscope);
- ability to analyze chemical, biochemical and biological data;
- conducting primary cell and tissue culture;
- the ability to design and undertaking simple research experiments in chemistry, biochemistry, and biology.
Communication skills
- possess effective presentation skills with the use of multimedia tools;
- can properly determine the priorities for the task implementation while planning scientific experiment;
- possess teamwork skills, which allow them to take up all kinds of collaborative roles;
- students can participate in extra classes certified by an appropriate diploma: “Self-presentation in a business situation”, “Effective communication”, “Teamwork skills”, “Dealing with stress”, “Leaders' course”.
Language skills
- have knowledge of specialized vocabulary in the field of biotechnology in English;
- possess the experience of communication with the professional environment in a foreign language and – depending on the group level – formulate and exchange ideas, describe phenomena, participate in debates and defend own opinion, share experience and skills with others.
Digital skills
- ability to use MS Office-class software;
- database management and creating images for presentation purposes;
- use of basic statistical methods and information technologies to describe natural phenomena and to analyze experimental data.
Analytical skills
- ability to draw proper conclusions on the basis of data collected from different sources;
- ability to describe, explain and interpret basic chemical and physicochemical phenomena.
Skills for self-employment
- knowledge and understanding of basic concepts and principles on the protection of industrial property rights and all kinds of copyrights;
- ability to use information concerning patent protection;
- understanding the general, legal and formal requirements for self-employment;
- extra-classes in economy and self-employment certified by diplomas: “Basic economy for non-economists”, “Individual enterprise – how to open and run a business”, “Project management”.
