Introduction
The profession of health administration is key to meeting the health and medical needs of the public.
The Health Services Administration major prepares students for entry-level administrative positions and administrative staff support roles in various health organizations such as hospitals, hospital systems, ambulatory clinics, physician practices, nursing homes and managed care organizations. Health services administration is a dynamic and rewarding profession that combines students' interests in health, business, and serving others.
Through case studies and applied learning activities, faculty help students gain an understanding of key management functions and techniques used in health organizations, current issues confronting administrators, and the role of administrators in assuring organizational performance.

Curriculum
The program in health services administration prepares students for entry-level administrative positions and staff positions requiring administrative skills in various health organizations including hospitals, hospital systems, managed care organizations, retirement and long-term care facilities, ambulatory care organizations, physician practices and public health facilities. In addition, the program provides the foundation for graduate study in health administration and related fields. The health services administration program is approved as a Full Certified undergraduate program by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).
Any student admitted to JMU can declare health services administration as his/her major and enroll in prerequisite courses. However, to progress in the major beyond the prerequisite courses, students must apply and be admitted to the program. To be eligible to apply, students must have completed or be enrolled in the following prerequisite courses at the time of application and receive a grade of “C-” or better:
- CIS 204. Computer Information Systems Fundamentals for Non-Business Majors
- ECON 201. Introduction to Microeconomics
- HTH 354. U.S. and Global Health Care Systems
Upon completion of all JMU and program requirements, the student is awarded the B.S. in Health Services Administration.
No more than 30 hours may be taken in the College of Business.

Madison awards more than 400 one- to four-year scholarships each year to incoming students. The primary criterion for merit-based scholarships is exceptional academic performance. Other selection criteria may include leadership, involvement, and career goals.

Qualifications for the majority of our scholarships are based on the General Application information as well as information pulled directly from your admissions application.
Review the criteria carefully for any recommended scholarship opportunities you are presented with and if you meet the qualifications, click apply to submit the additional required information. Deadlines vary across departments so be sure to complete the General Application as soon as possible to receive full consideration. Some scholarship opportunities become available starting in the fall while others open later so be sure to check back in January, February and March.
