Introduction

Madison Engineering provides you with an engineering education built on math and science foundations.

Rich in sustainable design, systems thinking and project management, Madison Engineering offers opportunities for customized in-depth learning through a variety of electives and engineering projects. Created in 2008 for 21st-century engineering needs, we offer a world-class undergraduate engineering experience based on a philosophy of learning by doing. Our project-based curriculum is designed to provide a modern way to specialize.

Our required two-year-long capstone project experience, in particular, provides a platform for customized learning in a focused area of interest - creating better learning experiences, more substantial references, and a portfolio of engineering work. After eight semesters of authentic project work, you will graduate project-ready, and be prepared for the flexibility and resilience needed in our rapidly changing work world.

As a JMU engineer you’ll:

  • Customize your education through real engineering projects.
  • Learn how to use saws, drill presses, lathes, sanders, and more.
  • Create solutions to community needs by turning ideas into prototypes.
  • Work on year-long projects to create solutions for a client’s needs.
  • Engage with engineering professionals in industry-sponsored projects.
  • Compete at national and international engineering venues.

The Engineering major at JMU combines the strengths of a traditional engineering curriculum with many of the attributes that industry and academic experts have identified as desirable in the engineer of the 21st century. The major spans the traditional engineering sub-disciplines; focuses on sustainability, engineering design and systems analysis; provides extensive hands-on laboratory and design studio experiences; and integrates business, management and social aspects of sustainable engineering design.

The curriculum is designed to meet all engineering accreditation standards and to prepare students to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) pre-licensure exam. Graduates will be prepared to succeed in the engineering workforce or in graduate engineering degree programs by exhibiting the practical ingenuity of an "engineering versatilist."
