Introduction
Sometimes learning about the past is the way to better understand the world we live in today. The past creates a broader perspective and allows us to discover important elements of the human existence.
As a history major at IUP, you’ll develop essential critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills needed to examine and interpret history. You’ll study time periods from ancient civilizations to more recent historical people, places, and events.
You can choose to study a broad range of topics such as Colonial America, medieval Europe, the Byzantine Empire, ancient Greece, Native Americans, early China, the Civil War era, Russia, and the Middle East.
All history majors are encouraged to consider doing an independent study or an honors thesis for credit. Free electives make it possible for you to take a minor such as Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Pan-African Studies, or Women’s Studies.
IUP history majors interested in studying artifacts and archaeological evidence can participate in an archaeology project overseas in Cyprus.
