Introduction

At its core, mechanical engineering is about more than just designing cars, household appliances, planes, or other complicated devices that make our world a better place. It’s about developing practical, efficient, and logical solutions to problems faced by society, companies, or individuals. If you have an interest in mathematics and physical sciences, and a desire to understand how things work, consider pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering.

In our mechanical engineering program, you will become familiar with general physical laws and the theoretical concepts from which many technological concepts derive. The coursework is structured to first build your capabilities in mathematics and science. These initial capabilities will be utilized and challenged as you develop an initial understanding of mechanical engineering principles in the areas of solid mechanics and thermo-fluid systems. These initial mechanical engineering principles will then be used to develop more complicated principles including designing machines and structures, heat transfer, and advanced thermodynamics. Coursework is supplemented by practical laboratory work, designed to supplement your understanding of these principles. The mechanical engineering program concludes with a senior capstone project where you, alone or with a group, take a design project from its initial definition to a first prototype.
