Introduction
The course Industrial Engineering & Management teaches you how to use technology, management, and economy in such a way that you will be able to improve production processes or make organizations profitable or more sustainable.
Do you want to help organizations - such as manufacturing sites, health care organizations, energy supply companies, or government agencies - to perform effectively in our increasingly complex society? Then this technical and managerial program is the right choice for you. As an Industrial Engineer and manager, you will be involved in designing, managing, optimizing, and improving business processes. You learn how to use technology, management, and finance to help organizations be more efficient and innovative, minimize risks, improve production processes, and maximize profitability.
Career Opportunities
There is a large demand worldwide for professionals with a combined technical and managerial background. Industrial Engineering & Management offers the best job perspectives and the highest starting salaries. Our graduates have secured positions as:
(Asset) manager
Assets are company resources, for instance, machines, vehicles, and other important ‘tools’. As an asset manager, it is your responsibility to make the right choice with respect to these (often) large, expensive, and advanced assets. You will be responsible for the purchasing, complete life cycle, and maintenance of these assets. To this end, you will outsource the research into the costs as well as the technical and commercial aspects, and the impact on the environment. You will give your advice based on this investigation.
Process engineer
You are able to quickly scan a company or department and use a variety of tools to analyze, improve and (re)design a given process.
Quality or Health and Safety Engineer
As a quality manager, you assist in establishing systems to support drive continuous improvements and minimize the costs. You plan, schedule, execute and coordinate the different activities related to quality, health, or safety issues.

Internship and graduation

In the third year, you will do an internship at a company of your choice in the Netherlands or abroad. During your internship, you will experience first-hand how process optimisation works in a technical company. Graduation research
In your final year, you will conduct graduation research and you will demonstrate that you are ready for the profession field. You can research how the production process of a renowned shoe manufacturer can be made more economical and efficient through robotisation and mechanisation, while at the same time, the quality of the shoes remains the same as when they were handcrafted.
Accredited study programme
In the Netherlands, the standard of higher education is maintained through an accreditation system that ensures legal regulation and quality assurance. All programmes at HZ University of Applied Sciences are examined and approved by the accreditor, the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that they meet the quality requirements for accredited higher education set by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, ensuring that you are always choosing a programme of high standard.

Scholarships and Funding
While common in other countries, scholarships, especially full scholarships, are rare in the Dutch education system. However, there are some scholarship options available at the HZ.
NL Scholarship for incoming students
The NL Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science and Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The NL Scholarship is for incoming students not originally from the EEA who have not previously studied in the Netherlands, and who plan to attend the HZ University of Applied Sciences in the framework of diploma mobility. The scholarship awarded is not a full scholarship. It has a value of € 5,000.00 and is allotted for one year only.
Conditions for allotment:
- The student is not from the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
- The student has not previously studied in the Netherlands.
- The student has an IELTS of 6.5 (or higher) or an equivalent.
- The student wants to enroll in a full-time (four-year or three-year) bachelor’s program at HZ.
- The student has already been (conditionally) accepted to the HZ Bachelor’s program as indicated with his/her scholarship application.
How to apply for the NL Scholarship
Students can apply for the scholarship by sending an email to [email protected] before 1 May of their starting year. In this email, the student should indicate the reasons for choosing the particular HZ Bachelor's program of study. The student must also send a copy of his/her CV with the email. The applications will be assessed by a two-member HZ Scholarship Committee, nominated by the academy directors. The HZ Scholarship Committee will award the scholarship based on previous academic results, and motivation for choosing a program of study, and C.V. applicants will be notified of the decision within 6 weeks after the application deadline of 1 May.
Mobility scholarships
When you are a student at HZ University of Applied Sciences and you are thinking of studying or doing research or an internship outside of the Netherlands during your studies, then you can apply for a scholarship.
HZ Grant
HZ offers an HZ Grant for students who study or do an unpaid internship outside the EU. As far as we know, HZ is the only university of applied sciences in the Netherlands that subsidizes its students with a grant.
NL Scholarship
This scholarship is meant for full-time HZ students who want to study, do research, or do an internship outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The NL Scholarship is a scholarship made available by the Dutch Ministry of Education Culture and Science together with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship amounts to a one-off payment of € 1,250 and is meant as a contribution toward your study expenses.
Erasmus+ grant
If you do part of your study at an HZ partner institute within the EU or an internship within the EU, you can apply for this grant. The Erasmus+ is a grant that the European Union has made available in order to stimulate students from its member states to gain experience abroad during their education; to enhance their languages, to become acquainted with other cultures, etc. The grant also serves as compensation in the travel and accommodation costs that a study/internship abroad will bring in its wake. Clearly, the Erasmus+ grant will not cover all the costs that you will have abroad.
As soon as you are a student of HZ, we can help you apply for a grant.
