Introduction
Technology is changing your world. Think of robots that would care for the elderly, boats that run on solar energy, or a machine that fishes plastic out of the ocean. Technical solutions that contribute to a sustainable world are in high demand. Are you curious, resourceful, and interested in technology? Find out how you can make a difference with a bachelor in Engineering!
If you choose to study Engineering at the HZ, you will be offered broad technical courses to become a real problem solver. You will learn to overcome technical challenges in the most sustainable, climate-neutral, and socially responsible way. You will learn how to design with less natural resources, less waste, and less energy. During this program, you will learn:
- Methods by which you learn to solve a problem with technology
- How to design a product or a process
- How to improve a product or process
- How systems work
- How to use technology to make products or processes sustainable
- How to make innovative machines and products
During the first year, you get an orientation on what you can do with technology. After obtaining your propaedeutic year, you will choose a field of study: the technical track or the creative track. Later in the program, you will choose a specific study track.
You will be presented with many assignments, which will require you to think carefully and then get to work. You often work in groups with other students on assignments from real companies. After you have received a theoretical explanation, you will immediately put it into practice. You will learn how to work independently and in a structured manner on a project, how to research an assignment first, make a plan of action, and how to communicate this effectively with your clients and fellow students.
Study tracks
In the final year of the Engineering program, you will have the freedom to choose a study track that suits you. We offer several study tracks:
- Product Engineering
- Commercial Engineering
- Energy & Process Engineering
- Mechatronic Engineering
Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
While common in other countries, scholarships, especially full scholarships, are rare in the Dutch education system. However, there are some scholarship options available at the HZ.
NL Scholarship for incoming students
The NL Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The NL Scholarship is for incoming students not originally from the EEA who have not previously studied in the Netherlands, and who plan to attend the HZ University of Applied Sciences in the framework of diploma mobility. The scholarship awarded is not a full scholarship. It has a value of € 5,000.00 and is allotted for one year only.
Please note: Payments will take place by transferring four installments of each € 1,250. If you drop out before 1 April 2024, the remaining installments will not be transferred to you.
Conditions for allotment:
- The student is not from the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
- The student has not previously studied in the Netherlands
- The student has an IELTS of 6.5 (or higher) or an equivalent
- The student wants to enroll in a full-time (four-year or three-year) bachelor’s or 1.5 year Master's program at HZ
- The student has already been (conditionally) accepted to the HZ Bachelor’s or the Master's program indicated with his/her scholarship application. See: how to apply for a Bachelors' program
How to apply for the NL Scholarship
Students can apply for the scholarship by sending an email to [email protected] before 1 May of their starting year. In this email, the student should indicate reasons for choosing the particular HZ Bachelor program of study. The student must also send a copy of his/her CV with the email. The applications will be assessed by a two-member HZ Scholarship Committee, nominated by the academy directors. The HZ Scholarship Committee will award the scholarship based on previous academic results, and motivation for choosing a program of study, and C.V. applicants will be notified of the decision within 6 weeks after the application deadline of 1 May.
Rotary Scholarship for Water Management, Civil Engineering, and River Delta Development
HZ University of Applied Sciences is pleased to announce a Scholarship donated by the Rotary Club Vlissingen/Flushing. The Scholarship amounts to €2,000 and is intended for a student who complies with the conditions listed below, and is a student of one of the following programs:
- BSc Water Management
- BSc Civil Engineering
- MSc River Delta Development
Criteria are as follows:
- Applicant must be an international (free moving) student;
- The applicant has already been (conditionally) accepted to one of the relevant programs;
- Applicant must indicate why this scholarship would be of great financial support AND how the costs for the duration of the whole academic program will be covered;

Mobility grants scholarships
When you are a student at HZ University of Applied Sciences and you are going abroad for a study or internship outside of the Netherlands, you can apply for a grant or scholarship.
HZ Grant
HZ offers a HZ Grant for students who study or do an unpaid internship outside the EU. As far as we know, HZ is the only university of applied sciences in the Netherlands that subsidizes its students with a grant.
NL Scholarship
This scholarship is meant for full-time HZ students who want to study, do research, or do an internship outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The NL Scholarship is a scholarship made available by the Dutch Ministry of Education Culture and Science together with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship amounts to a one-off payment of € 1,250 and is meant as a contribution towards your study expenses.
Erasmus+ grant
If you do part of your study or do your internship at an HZ partner institute, you can apply for this grant. The Erasmus+ is a grant that the European Union has made available in order to stimulate students from its member states to gain experience abroad during their education; to enhance their languages, to become acquainted with other cultures, etc. The grant is a contribution to the expenses you will make, it will most probably not cover all the expenses.
Curriculum
Year 1
During the first year, you will be introduced to broad technical basic skills. In practice, you will carry out assignments that come close to the professional field. This will help you find out which specialization suits you best.
Year 2
After year one, you will choose a field of study: the technical track [Energy and process Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering] or the creative track [Commercial Engineering and Product Engineering].
- In the technical track, you will focus on the underlying technologies and you will strongly concentrate on deepening your beta knowledge.
- If you choose the creative track, you will mainly focus on realising solutions for people and society with the help of technological developments.
Year 3
In the third year of the program, you choose your minor. A minor will enable you to deepen or broaden your knowledge and skills. You can do this at the HZ or another university of applied sciences at home or abroad.
The HZ offers various minors that complement the Engineering program:
- Minor Offshore Renewable Energy Mechatronic: In this minor, you will work on the development of robots and drones. These are used to carry out maintenance on wind farms in the North Sea.
- Minor Energy Transition: You will make sure that companies switch to clean fuels, such as hydrogen.
