Introduction
Programme Characteristics
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering is one of the premier electrical engineering degree programmes in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in electrical power and energy. The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as management.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives in modern transportation systems and a direct career path into the high-growth transportation industry and related sectors.
Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.
Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including Cardiff University, National University of Singapore, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.
Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.
Program Outcome
Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering based on outcome-based education philosophy. The programme produces engineers who are able to practise their professions in a wide range of areas of electrical engineerings, such as electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, and computer and fibre-optic applications. A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and the specialist knowledge needed to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus places emphasis on the mastery of both fundamental principles and the application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is training in leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.
We encourage lifelong learning to enable graduates to keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications of the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering to broaden the career opportunities available to our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to relevant areas in the field of transportation systems. The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and integrating them to provide engineering solutions to practical problems form the core of the programme.
Curriculum
- The Year One curriculum focuses on fundamental studies, such as physics, mathematics, languages, information technology and general education.
- The Year Two curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, engineering economics, computing and introductory studies of electrical engineering.
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering
In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and elective subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals and developing teamwork and experimental skills. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
Students take advanced core subjects and elective subjects and carry out final year projects. Final year projects provide a comprehensive experience of learning engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisations, students can choose from a list of technical and non-technical electives to complement their knowledge in different areas of electrical engineering.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering
In Year Three, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is provided. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
During their final year, students take five core subjects in transportation systems and one elective subject covering advanced or specialised topics related to transportation. Students may choose individual projects that are relevant to transportation systems engineering.
Secondary Major Details
The option of a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering.
Features
Artificial intelligence and data analytics (AIDA) is the most prevailing technologies across various disciplines, and have become a de-facto standard approach to enrich business, advance technology and achieve breakthroughs in virtually all fields. The Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) enables students to integrate AIDA skills into the study of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and provides an opportunity for detailed study in a choice of related specialist areas.
Remarks
Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice by students and not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. This Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and is subject to quota availability. Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Electrical Engineering, not later than the commencement of the second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.
* Subject to approval
