Introduction
Programme Characteristics
LMS aims to provide innovation-driven education and scholarship in the logistics and maritime fields, comprising high-quality research, professional training, and consulting activities relating to shipping, transport, and supply chain and operations management.
Our programmes provide students with a well-rounded business education centred on supply chain management and analytics, aviation management and finance, and international shipping and transport logistics. The curriculums are designed to meet the current and future needs of the relevant industries. The programmes emphasise active student participation and industry collaboration.
After students complete a common Year 1 curriculum, they are invited to choose one of the following awards, indicating the area of study in which they will specialise until graduation:
- Aviation Management and Finance (BBA-AMF)
- International Shipping and Transport Logistics (BBA-ISTL)
- Supply Chain Management and Analytics (BBA-SCMA)
All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, and mentorship.
If students wish and subject to availability, they can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in mainland China, with the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.
BBA (Hons) in Aviation Management and Finance
This programme equips students with a well-rounded business education with a specialisation in aviation management and finance, an in-depth understanding of how airports, airlines, aircraft leasing companies, government agencies, regulators, and other groups of professionals, such as financial services firms and consultants, contribute to the functioning of aviation markets; and the necessary background required to become an integral part of the aviation industry.
BBA (Hons) in International Shipping and Transport Logistics
This programme provides well-rounded business education, along with the opportunity to specialise in international shipping and logistics management. It enables students to acquire a wide knowledge of maritime transport and logistics within a general broad framework of international transport and trade.
The programme fosters strong management skills in areas including communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem-solving and the effective use of information technology. Graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to understand and manage maritime organisations and personnel.
BBA (Hons) in Supply Chain Management and Analytics
Supply chain management focuses on how firms optimise resources in a logistics network that delivers value to end customers. As Hong Kong is a logistics and trading centre of global importance, supply chain management is of particular relevance to many businesses and industries. With the advancement of technological innovation and business analytics, the integration of management knowledge and analytical skills becomes essential for supply chain managers to make effective decisions.
This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education that specialises in supply chain management and analytics. The curriculum aims to develop students’ skills and knowledge in business and supply chain analytics, information technology and innovation, operations and cross-functional management, international business, and transport logistics to meet the current and future needs of logistics and supply chain-related industries.
Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms either during the summer vacation or alongside their studies. Summer placements may be available in Hong Kong, in mainland China, or overseas. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.
Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission
Students follow a common curriculum in the first year under the Scheme. The common curriculum offers students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, which facilitates their Major programme selection.
The decision to admit students to a Major programme will be made by the Department based on the students’ choice and their overall GPA of Year One study. Students will be asked to rank their choices of Major programme (from the most preferred one to the least) during semester 2 of their Year One study for the Department’s consideration and approval.
The number of students admitted to BBA (Hons) in Aviation Management and Finance, BBA (Hons) in International Shipping and Transport Logistics and BBA (Hons) in Supply Chain Management and Analytics will be capped at 40% of the total number of students in that year.
Curriculum
All programmes under the Scheme have the following structure:
- General University Requirements (GUR)
- Compulsory Core subjects for all programmes under the Scheme
- Discipline-specific subjects
- Free Electives
After students complete a common Year 1 curriculum, they select one of the three LMS BBA programmes as a Major.
Year 1 covers the University’s Compulsory Core subjects and fundamental business subjects, along with Broadening subjects and Language and Communication Requirements subjects. Through this wide exposure to business and logistics disciplines, students can make an informed choice of a suitable award with specialisation for graduation.
From Year 2 onwards, students follow the curriculums of their selected Major programmes. They also have the chance to integrate their knowledge through a one-year Capstone Project in their final year of study.
Career Opportunities
The multidisciplinary nature of the programme, which fosters knowledge and skills in aviation management, shipping and transport logistics, and supply chain management, maximises the employment opportunities available to graduates. Graduates may pursue careers with service providers in the logistics, aviation, and maritime industries.
