Introduction
The Department of History prepares students for Social Studies (Composite) Grades 7-12. The state standards are incorporated into the required curriculum. Students are introduced to a wide range of courses including history, cultural geography, state and local government, political theory, and economics. Students who graduate with this certification will have a knowledge and understanding of the social, political, cultural, and religious movements, the most influential people, scientific discoveries, and technological advances as well as the major events which have shaped human history.
Accredited Program
The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and Texas Education Agency (TEA) Office of Accountability has awarded Hardin-Simmons University Teacher Education Program a rating of “Accredited” under the Accountability System for Educator Preparation authorized by Texas Education Code 21.045 every year since the rating of teacher preparation entities has been awarded. Educator preparation programs are held accountable for the performance of their graduates on the state credentialing examinations required for certification. Programs must achieve a minimum pass rate on the tests by disaggregated subgroups (All, Male, Female, White, Hispanic, African American, Other) to receive a rating of “Accredited.”

Program Outcome
Students who complete these degrees will be eligible to take one of the following Texas certification tests: Social Studies 7-12 or English Language Arts Reading Social Studies 4-8. These certifications lead to Social Studies teaching positions in 7-12 grade in the content of History, Government, Economics, and Political Science or English and Social Studies 4-8 grade.
