Introduction
Become an expert on Middle Eastern languages and cultures
The Middle East is one of the most historic and storied areas of the world.
Stretching from Libya to Turkey and southward down the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East encompasses: Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, the Gaza Strip, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the West Bank, and Yemen.
As a Middle Eastern languages and culture student, you’ll get an in-depth understanding of this region and graduate prepared for a wide variety of careers.
You can choose from two tracks.
Scholarships and Funding
Curriculum
Language track
In this track, you’ll complete at least three years of language study in Arabic, ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish.
In addition to gaining an advanced understanding of at least one of these languages, you’ll take a wide variety of classes focusing on Middle Eastern culture.
Culture track
In addition to completing two years of study in Arabic, ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish, you’ll tailor your program to address a specific area you want to study.
Choose a country to focus on or broaden your academic journey to cover a topic like history, literature, or modern culture.
And immerse yourself in the country of your choice
You’ll be strongly encouraged to complete at least one semester living and studying in the Middle East. IU offers a variety of foreign study programs in the region, including:

- Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel
- Jordan-SIT Program in Amman, Jordan
- Morocco-SIT Program in Rabat, Morocco
- Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey
