Introduction
Why This Degree?
Conflict is an inherent dimension of human interaction, ranging from disputes over resources or disagreements among family and friends to acts of terrorism and policies reinforcing inequality. If it is not addressed properly, conflict can be expressed violently and generate disastrous consequences.
One possible antidote lies in the multidisciplinary concentration of Applied Conflict Analysis and Resolution, which provides students with a broad theoretical perspective for understanding the complex nature of conflict while building practical skills focused on the prevention, management, settlement, resolution, and transformation of conflict and violence.
Program Outcome
This concentration:
- Builds on your current skills to ensure your competitiveness in the region’s growing workforce.
- Maximizes your accumulated credits and ‘life credits.’
- Develops key career skills, such as critical thinking, written and oral communication, interpersonal collaboration, and problem-solving through its interactive and engaging curriculum. Students can focus on interpersonal, community and organizational, or international conflicts.
- Prepares you for careers such as education, counseling, management, law enforcement, the military, diplomacy, and other public policy positions in state or federal government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), or non-profit organizations.
- Courses are taught by outstanding Mason faculty and have flexible scheduling options offered at the Fairfax campus.
Curriculum
BAS students must fulfill all requirements for bachelor's degrees including Mason Core requirements, to include 45 credits of upper-level coursework. All Mason Core requirements must be met with either George Mason courses or transferrable equivalents.
The minimum credit requirement for a bachelor's degree is 120 credits; however, while there is some variation between concentration areas, fulfilling all Mason Core requirements and an academic concentration is likely to require most BAS students to complete at least 63-66 credits at George Mason, which may lead to over 120 credits of coursework in order to receive the degree.
The degree plan outlined is based on a student who transfers in a minimum of 30 credits from a completed AAS degree. Some of these credits may count only towards the elective requirement within the BAS degree.
Total credits: 120-126
This concentration is in collaboration with the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution.
