Climate change and economic drivers mean there is a strong move toward renewable energy from wind, wave and tidal sources - and correspondingly an increased demand for power system engineers.
This programme has been designed in collaboration with industry and has a strong emphasis on practical experience. It provides a broad education in electrical, mechanical and electronic engineering, alongside specialist modules in power engineering and power electronics.
You will have access to well-equipped computer-aided engineering and electrical and electronic laboratories with leading technologies, as well as the opportunity for two industry placements.
Your career
Graduates from this programme are likely to be much in demand with global power companies such as Howden, GEC, Doosan, Babcock, Scottish Power and the Weir Group.

International student start dates
For new international students, orientation events start on 14 September 2018. This extra time is specifically designed to assist new international students in settling into the UK and GCU prior to the start of general student induction and teaching.
There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus and city tours, as well as welcome events where you can meet other international students.
Professional accreditation
The Electrical Power Engineering degree is accredited by IET the Institute of Engineering and Technology and EI the Energy Institute.Coursework is designed to meet the requirements of UKSPEC the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence by the Engineering Council UK and the MEng pathways satisfy the academic requirements for C.Eng Chartered Engineer status.
Work placement
Two industry-based placements are offered, one of which spans 48 weeks. These are not compulsory placements and nor are they guaranteed.

Assessment methods
Examinations, coursework, class tests, presentations, computer-based exercises and written reports are used to assess your achievements during the learning outcomes.
Our aim is to build our students’ abilities in the areas demanded by employers in a global knowledge economy, through linking with employers to provide students with an authentic learning experience that blends with relevant studies.Our students find that one of the underlying strengths of this programme of study is the other students as many currently enrolled are conducting their studies part-time, whilst holding down full-time jobs, or are sponsored by international companies.The valuable experience of these students is fed back into the classroom and informally shared to the benefit of fellow students.

Provides a range of basic concepts of IT and the Principles of Electrical, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering.
Year 2
Introduces Management Responsibilities of a Professional Engineer, Mathematics, Thermodynamics, Energy Resources, Generation & Utilisation, Electrical Systems, Instrumentation and Control Systems.
Year 3
Control Engineering, Power Electronic Systems, Plant & Electrical Distribution, Energy Conversion Technologies.
Year 4
Honour Project, Power Systems Technology, Electrical Machines, Renewable Energy Technology, Control Engineering.
